The American Kidney Fund (AKF) is a non-profit organization founded in 1971. Its mission is to fight kidney disease through direct financial support to patients in need, through health education, and through prevention efforts. In 2013 more than 87,000 people—1 out of every 5 U.S. dialysis patients—received grant assistance from the American Kidney Fund. AKF’s grants help low-income dialysis patients with health insurance premiums and other treatment necessities not covered by health insurance, such as transportation to dialysis, nutritional products and emergency assistance.
