Therefore, the white patches appear on the skin which can either occur as one section or all over the body that could join together (coalesce). <span id=\"urn:enhancement-53099432-078f-408f-b0d9-aca515383563\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">Vitiligo<\/span> tends to progress over time and some of the cases can also have patches of pigment loss affecting the hair and the scalp. This is considered an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-884e5b96-9129-413c-998b-adf7ee207d7f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/autoimmune\">autoimmune<\/span> disorder when the body\u2019s immune system attacks its own tissue and organs. In around 15 \u2013 25 percent of the affected cases, they also have one other <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9a68a927-8997-47fa-9f5e-af332f8ace47\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/autoimmune\">autoimmune<\/span> disorder particularly <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5ce21113-3831-4a17-8842-d1fadc8b8141\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/rheumatoid-arthritis\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/span>, type 1 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-01f968af-fa02-4528-8c12-77e12cc7436b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/diabetes\">diabetes<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fc831262-53a8-4eae-a37c-0cff362fb99e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/psoriasis\">psoriasis<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7a38ca8a-151c-49f6-969a-3f1f2e93486a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/autoimmune\">autoimmune<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-13a757aa-849b-4622-a3c0-ccafe43d1b9c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/thyroid\">thyroid<\/span>. Although it can develop at any age, the average onset of the condition appears to be around the mid-twenties. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-72aaba9e-da75-4acd-a994-30200ccf5a94\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">Vitiligo<\/span> does not affect the overall health of the individual, but the physical appearance can cause serious psychological and emotional difficulties. There are several forms of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0e8f6152-9a94-4b90-9314-a9f59153c1d5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span> that are identified. The generalized <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b50afc6a-7ba5-4f07-807c-9586d1cb8135\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span> is considered the common form presenting loss of pigments in patches of skin all over the body. It affects the face, neck, scalp, the mouth and the genitals. It can also occur in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f6d5d92c-8bc3-4ba4-aa19-c8b476b5737a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mucous-membranes\">mucous membranes<\/span> such as the lips. Segmental <span id=\"urn:enhancement-90850a74-f8ec-40f7-a952-7c96d772e43c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span> is another form presenting patches of depigment skin affecting one side of the body in a limited area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is it identified?<\/strong> The most obvious sign is the loss of pigmentation resulting in irregularly-shaped patches on the skin. Usually, the discoloration appears on the sun-exposed areas such as the hands, feet, arms and the face. It can also include premature graying of the hair on the scalp, eyebrows, eyelash, the beard and the loss of color of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5dcfa924-9010-4932-9243-53d26efb5015\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/retina\">retina<\/span>. It is not possible to predict the progression of the disease and in most cases, the condition continues to involve majority of the skin and in rare cases, the color may return back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treatment Options<\/strong> There are many treatment options for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c31401e3-b46e-49a7-a4a9-825c9999deaa\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span> which can be discussed with the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-01da2281-0870-4434-862f-62f289489056\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dermatological\">dermatologist<\/span>. The treatment for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cb4898d6-d58d-4e1e-992c-0a8076f87f67\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span> is based on the overall health, age and the location of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ef968763-dc2f-4271-ba8a-358d77f3ed5d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span>. The options can include;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No medical treatment but the use of cosmetics such as makeup and self-tanners to make the condition less noticeable.<\/li>\n<li>Medication used on the skin can help add color such as potent or super-potent <span id=\"urn:enhancement-643939c7-9b15-4a93-adeb-05349ef3ce2d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/corticosteroid\">corticosteroid<\/span> and around 45% of the cases regain the skin color.<\/li>\n<li>Light treatment can be used to restore the lost color. Individuals need to sit in a lightbox for the treatment of widespread <span id=\"urn:enhancement-53ad9909-7b99-4d34-9337-cab7a1e34f0c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vitiligo\">vitiligo<\/span>. Also, around 70% of individuals receiving excimer laser treatment can see effective results but in some cases, the results can disappear within a year of stopping the treatment.<\/li>\n<li>UVA light treatment can be used and with a medication called psoralen which can either be applied on the skin or taken as a pill.
