It is also known as \u2018lazy\u2019 eye and occurs when the nerve pathways between the brain and the eye don\u2019t function properly. Individuals with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-48ee7241-2dff-4f55-a66a-a19127013542\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span> may have blurry vision even with glasses. This abnormal development of vision occurs in infancy or childhood. There are several types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-af917f6e-0614-4a85-8275-611ec3750168\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span> with different causes, but all exhibit poor vision of the affected eye.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Causes<\/strong> Some of the various causes associated with the different types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0cff52c0-e49b-4176-ba6f-b18ff4892b44\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span> include <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0abea172-0f77-4250-90cb-37a79b3f14e4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/strabismic\">strabismic<\/span>, deprivation and refractive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span id=\"urn:enhancement-d2736506-1e1f-4a76-b3b8-f3520c4bdf06\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/strabismic\">Strabismic<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-85c45c99-a9d2-4a9c-bd28-6b69a019fb04\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is one of the common causes of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2da131b-3b1d-4e67-ba46-fd7a0356e82d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span>. This occurs with the misalignment when the eye is not straight and may turn in, out, up or down resulting in double vision. This happens when the brain \u2018turns off\u2019 the visual input of the affected eye creating <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b0a2c8e4-cb8e-4d67-b7c7-4d6be5dc204b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deprivation <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b8c02636-6a42-4b41-b9a1-1c7533bd1b8a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This occurs when the certain condition causes problems affecting the line of vision. It can include the presence of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f0d129f0-9255-4d7d-9cec-6a2be7401e54\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cataracts\">cataract<\/span>, droopy eyelid and an eyelid lesion. Early treatment is required to enable the development of normal vision.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Refractive <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c1ce443d-ea26-4ec3-9e32-d32ab696018c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This develops with an unequal <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0edd7814-ea88-4ea5-a819-19d14d86aa52\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/refractive-errors\">refractive error<\/span> between the two eyes and can consist of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4e2f12a2-184d-4211-8221-60f1f12e5334\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/farsightedness\">farsightedness<\/span> or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-556e0193-8ec4-47fd-b6a9-728c042b0bb2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nearsightedness\">nearsightedness<\/span>. The brain may \u2018turn off\u2019 the eye producing blurred vision causing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1213a09c-a150-4bb1-ae65-e6833b5ed7a1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span> from the disuse of the eye.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\u00a0As <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b99f3f1e-9a41-44dd-aaf8-f85913e0ebbb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span> affects the infant\u2019s vision, the symptoms can be difficult to identify. Generally, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ea9b0154-6ad0-44d9-ab16-e313cd6256e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/strabismic\">strabismus<\/span> is the common cause of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bd19d62f-9680-4106-a5bc-b5216fe6e1af\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span>. Hence, children identified with eye misalignment should have an eye examination. An indication of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-89167d70-6521-4e62-b046-19b6cabcb51c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span> includes children who may become irritable when one eye is covered during a visual task such as reading.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnosis:<\/strong> It is usually not easy to detect the presence of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6e613eac-268c-44e3-802c-c00edd4a36fc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span>. Unless there is an obvious abnormality such as misaligned eye, it is often difficult for parents to understand the condition. However, during the eye examination, the eye specialist (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-584a4aec-9ce6-4e50-9a9c-b6b5d1be0dec\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ophthalmologist\">ophthalmologist<\/span>) may estimate the <span id=\"urn:local-text-annotation-syaedy0qzz9rbjqhw7qchs90hnz9kdu7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/visual-acuity\">visual acuity<\/span> by observing how the baby follows objects with single eye while the other one is covered. The tests may also include examining the inside of the eye to detect if other disorders may be the cause of vision problems which could include tumors, inflammations and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-949be6d4-ba9a-4396-a20b-31c6f82acb80\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cataracts\">cataracts<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Treatment<\/strong> Early treatment is always advised. Children with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6187123e-ea37-4d7b-83ae-54d6d9b3b96f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/refractive-errors\">refractive errors<\/span> can be corrected with glasses or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-23dbff4d-7d9d-44bb-8cfa-3ac756255e99\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/contact-lenses\">contact lenses<\/span>. Those with the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-db7a9dc9-b7c4-4de7-a4b5-dce91ca6df0e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cataracts\">cataract<\/span> require prompt treatment to minimize the risk of developing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9459b437-ddcc-4b05-8cf5-963e69537102\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amblyopia\">amblyopia<\/span>. The other forms of treatment involve in enabling the children to use the weaker eye. This may involve the patching or eye drops to blur the better vision eye. The patching may be effective when started early allowing the weak eye to get stronger over time. This may require several hours a day for weeks or months. When the child is unable to wear the patch, the atropine drops will be used to temporarily blur the vision of the strong eye. However, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4d5567dd-474a-4dc0-9567-58e05175921f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pediatric\">pediatric<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4232eccb-449d-42c9-a3bd-baa577b43e16\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ophthalmologist\">ophthalmologist<\/span> can select the appropriate treatment regime.
