However, this is viewed as a step in the right direction among scientists and health experts as preventive measure occupy a key role in the absence of specialized treatments and vaccines. Dr. Dimopoulos said, <em>\u201cIt will guide us on how to make mosquitoes resistant to multiple types of viruses. Ideally, you want a mosquito that is resistant to other viruses as well.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Researchers noted that the mosquitoes from natural habitats, in fact, mount an immune system response when exposed to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cf992681-4b80-458b-aea8-600010ef9057\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dengue\">dengue<\/span> but are too weak to stop transmission. The genetically bred mosquitoes were developed for mounting a strong immune response and this was done by manipulating the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-04f07003-b168-4757-9fc9-f12393582832\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/janus-kinase\">Janus kinase<\/span>\/signal transducers and activators of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-65132551-d87c-43b4-a787-cdf183f20028\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/transcription\">transcription<\/span> (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-763fdb58-0b4c-4501-8687-035c144c0e56\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/jak-stat\">JAK\/STAT<\/span>) pathway in the mosquitoes\u2019 immune system, that regulates the production of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-91b60415-e594-4a3b-b637-b9b732c14981\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> factors.<\/p>\n<p>The findings of the study were published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genengnews.com\/gen-news-highlights\/dengue-resistant-mosquitoes-have-arrived\/81253708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases<\/a> in an article titled \u201cEngineered <span id=\"urn:enhancement-49ecb178-b1c2-4ebf-83a0-2cf623373048\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/aedes-aegypti\">Aedes aegypti<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b6ca4ddb-bf5c-4ecc-a5dd-4f9707d551de\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/jak-stat\">JAK\/STAT<\/span> Pathway-Mediated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e7df602b-dc12-49a5-b4bc-687c20f7ef45\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immunity\">Immunity<\/span> to Dengue Virus\u201d The researchers are looking forward to engineer mosquitoes in which <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1685398e-c1fd-436a-b285-6a4a0313f2e3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> factors can be produced in the gut. This would assist in inducing a stronger immune response and possibly confer resistance to the other viruses as well.<\/p>\n<p>As always, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dd692087-b038-4f29-80ca-664669763a2b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/genetic-engineering\">genetic engineering<\/span> and GMOs have their fair share of controversies in the past few years. The team is keen on getting the extensive lab and semi-field studies right before letting the mosquitoes wander in the wild.
