The main cause for this addiction is due to the presence of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7938fd76-0e98-418d-be90-d695f662329d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nicotine\">nicotine<\/span>, which stimulates dopamine release and increases dopamine concentration, a mechanism that is thought to be the basis for addiction to drugs. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-63780610-4c2d-4859-98b6-dd8bdf390fe5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nicotine\">Nicotine<\/span> is the min alkaloid present in tobacco. The main acute effects of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d3cbbcb5-df6b-4525-863f-9f97e2289e4b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nicotine\">nicotine<\/span> on the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8a33db87-bd93-480d-ac11-b54a8e52bd40\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cardiovascular\">cardiovascular<\/span> system are as follows: peripheric vasoconstriction, increased systemic arterial pressure, and increased cardiac frequency. The most widely used biomarker in tobacco users is urine <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c41466c4-34bd-4a72-a962-c5a0f486f8fb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cotinine\">cotinine<\/span> as it has higher sensitivity compared to blood <span id=\"urn:enhancement-972fcb62-27e3-4e79-808c-81cd0b87e23f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cotinine\">cotinine<\/span>. The size of the subject pool will influence the choice of body fluids for analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Specific methods have been developed for the qualtitavive and quantitative detection of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c6e64ae3-09c1-48b3-9f55-82b296b9f35e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nicotine\">nicotine<\/span> and it major metabolite namely <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c9e3dac5-2c74-4920-9cb1-1da5d2eff3e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cotinine\">cotinine<\/span>, 3-hyrodycotinine and 3-hydroxycotinine <span id=\"urn:enhancement-461d88c1-ba5f-40a3-80b3-da912e41b7c5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/glucuronide\">glucuronide<\/span> in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a903f257-180e-4244-9d47-eed084ddc8b5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/plasma\">plasma<\/span> or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1c538a73-7768-4db5-a0a6-cf95546d6de9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/serum\">serum<\/span> of active and passive smokers. As these method require expensive equipment, large amount of samples, reagents, skilled operators and in addition the procedure is time consuming making GC, LC and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-08e8fb71-aa94-4655-9a22-98aad85e614c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hplc\">HPLC<\/span> the least preferred method when bulk samples are to be screened.<\/p>\n<p>In cases where the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ca3a5cc5-c002-4f4c-bb9b-14ac8cb2bd7d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cotinine\">cotinine<\/span> concentration has to be screened regularly, an alternative analytical immunological procedure known as enyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-bd7352b7-be5a-4c17-80a6-ebcedb185dae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/elisa\">ELISA<\/span>), fluorescence <span id=\"urn:enhancement-608f86ce-6044-4b19-92d9-01b491b704c1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immunoassay\">immunoassay<\/span> (FIA), and radioimmunoassay (RIA) \u00a0can be adopted as the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2a1a32ed-449b-4947-8ded-4f03f122d5f6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immunoassay\">immunoassay<\/span> method has several advantages. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-23cd571f-ca6c-4a6c-ba5d-559cd94c8bde\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/elisa\">ELISA<\/span> method is a practically validated method for monitoring biological exposure to tobacco smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Although measuring 3HC would be advantageous, the analysis of 3HC using <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8b166958-35cd-4062-8bc8-f24ce0a523c4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/gc-ms\">GC\u2013MS<\/span> or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-322065bd-474e-461e-b19a-41af713c0f26\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hplc\">HPLC<\/span> is complicated, and the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-08c32a3f-8f7b-4e58-b8c2-fcc18e3d0205\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/detection-limit\">detection limit<\/span> is too high; even solid phase extraction results in a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2dce8dd2-a08b-44d6-aae3-e710b7856b00\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/detection-limit\">detection limit<\/span> of about 20\u00a0ng\/mL.
