The US FDA\u2019s accelerated approval of AstraZeneca\u2019s Calquence comes as a great relief for adults suffering from mantle cell<\/span> lymphoma<\/span>. The drug can only be used to treat those patients who have received at least one prior therapy. The newly approved drug is a new addition to currently available options for treatment of mantle cell<\/span> lymphoma<\/span>, a type of aggressive cancer<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The drug works as a kinase inhibitor that works by blocking an enzyme needed for multiplication and spreading of cancer<\/span>. The commonly occurring side effects of Calquence are headache, diarrhea, bruising, fatigue, muscle pain, reduced levels of red blood cells (anemia<\/span>), platelets<\/span> (thrombocytopenia<\/span>) and neutrophils<\/span> (neutropenia<\/span>) in the blood. The serious side effects include bleeding, infections and irregular heartbeat.<\/p>\n

The FDA granted priority review for the application and breakthrough designations for the drug candidate and Orphan drug status to the newly approved drug. The regulator\u2019s interest in prioritizing this development shows the commitment to combat mantle cell<\/span> lymphoma<\/span>.<\/p>\n

A rare type of B cell<\/span> non-Hodgkin lymphoma<\/span>, mantle cell<\/span> lymphoma<\/span> is a cancer<\/span> of the lymphatic system<\/span>. The colorless that flowing through the lymphatic system<\/span> is called lymph<\/span>, and this circulates around the body tissues. Mantle cell<\/span> lymphoma<\/span> affects the type B lymphocytes<\/span>. Tumors are formed when abnormal B lymphocytes<\/span> accumulate in the lymphatic system<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Though Mantle cell<\/span> lymphoma<\/span> is classified as low grade lymphoma<\/span> as visible under the microscope, the lymphoma<\/span> often grows quickly like high grade lymphoma<\/span>. Lymphoma<\/span> is cancer<\/span> of lymph<\/span> system, part of body\u2019s immune system and made of lymph<\/span> tissue, lymph nodes<\/span>, the spleen, thymus<\/span>, tonsils and bone marrow.
