Females, especially older ones are more prone to infection than men.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">Mostly the infection is passed during sexual activity as the parasite can get transferred between two individuals. Whereas, in males, the inside part of the penis become infected and the infection spreads either from the penis to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7ff8c816-0795-427b-b990-f4cdbf4f5172\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vagina\">vagina<\/span> or vice-versa.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, other body parts like mouth, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1c098860-db53-4d8f-9900-aa996f5e3d3d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/perianal\">anus<\/span> or hands can also get infected. Newly-born babies can also get the infection while passing through the birth canal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\">Among the infected individuals, almost 70% of cases present no visible symptoms.\u00a0 However, when symptoms are present, it can vary between mild to more inflammation.\u00a0 Symptoms mostly start to develop within 5 to 28 days from the infection or of the parasite.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms in the males include-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Irritations or itching at the inner part of the penis.<\/li>\n<li>Burning sensation at the time of urination or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-32f599c8-09b4-472c-ad13-bcb226f5a013\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ejaculation\">ejaculation<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Discharge from the male <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d1a5da8e-0445-4535-862c-21ff26f2ebae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/genital\">genital<\/span> part.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms in females individual include-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Itching, burning sensation during urination or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9dd9cc3c-cd5d-4043-98d2-bb011a3f0317\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/genital\">genital<\/span> soreness.<\/li>\n<li>Change in Vaginal discharge pattern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"4\"><strong>Trichomoniasis diagnosis, treatment, and prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"urn:enhancement-f59e3875-6ac1-48d4-aee6-c33b8064f61f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/trichomoniasis\">Trichomoniasis<\/span> gets typically diagnosed by microscopic examination of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2c3e29ac-961b-47f6-9131-ab62e55bbf98\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaginal-fluid\">vaginal fluid<\/span> for female and urine sample for male individuals.\u00a0 The growth of parasite taken from a suspected individual is the standard method for the parasite diagnosis.\u00a0 However, there are several new testing methods available, such as-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>APTIMA <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b36940a4-c1fa-4630-b070-978180eb42cd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/trichomonas-vaginalis\">Trichomonas vaginalis<\/span> assay: <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b6eae878-b4a9-4f45-91e8-baffff9d657f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nucleic-acid\">Nucleic acid<\/span> amplification technique.<\/li>\n<li>OSOM Trichomonas Rapid Test: a Rapid test method for point of care diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Wet mount microscopy: a low-cost method with lower sensitivity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"5\">The treatment procedure for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4b931c93-a4c9-4fbc-afaf-b01558d9dee0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/trichomoniasis\">Trichomoniasis<\/span> includes a single megadose of metronidazole or tinidazole which is generally sold under the name of Flagyl and Tindamax. Alternatively, a lower dose can be advised for a week. Consumption of these two medications is also safe during pregnancy. However, consumption of alcohol is prohibited within 24 hours after the medication as alcohol can leads to nausea and vomiting tendency. For complete eradication of the infection both the partners are required to take the medications. There is always a chance for re-infection, and therefore screening is recommended within two weeks \u2013 3 months to rule out reinfection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6\">For sexually active individuals, following preventive measures can be taken to avoid the possibility of getting infected by <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8c7e8892-4c35-468a-877f-6690dc90adf8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/trichomoniasis\">Trichomoniasis<\/span>.<br \/>\n\u2022 A long-term monogamous relationship with an individual who is negative for any <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6650a3ef-107f-49e7-9dee-cfa83f1f4cd7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/sexually-transmitted-diseases\">STDs<\/span>.<br \/>\n\u2022 Usage of latex condoms, however, the open areas has the chance to get infected by the parasite.<br \/>\n\u2022 For a new partner, discussion about potential risks of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2a98ab77-65e8-40b7-8958-a8e35a78a09e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/sexually-transmitted-diseases\">STDs<\/span><br \/>\n\u2022 Regular check-ups for the presence of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cf317d8b-96ed-4a4f-9be4-3a5da68abbf9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/trichomoniasis\">Trichomoniasis<\/span> parasites, as one in every three individuals, are known to prone to re-infection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Table of Contents 1.
