However, the active virus circulating is identified as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-51fa68a7-f105-433e-8342-25d3bd541fb6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A(<span id=\"urn:enhancement-2b7d3faa-affe-4144-9d68-e189863b0629\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span>)pdm09 reported in the recent three weeks. In the United States, Guam and two States shows local <span id=\"urn:enhancement-04353044-c7a4-4169-b202-39a83ab1ab15\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity, forty states with sporadic activity and one <span id=\"urn:enhancement-007d5a98-44e7-4b77-ad61-d98808de1626\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>-related pediatric death has so far been reported. According to the WHO, the second most common illness globally is <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ced18417-06b2-43a2-a266-04d239e27eeb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> and is the third cause of death. And hence, CDC recommends appropriate measures that need to be taken to prevent the infection and to effectively treat it with antivirals to stop the complications that can develop particularly among the high risk group of people. Here we discuss the actions and recommendations by CDC for the initiation of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-61ae7729-c91b-4911-a4aa-b7a07249376d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> treatment, its duration or chemoprophylaxis and vaccine recommendations for the season 2017-2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">Antiviral Treatment Recommendations For the treatment of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1d0fd074-b5ea-4d53-9ac6-808739d2cc86\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>, there are five licensed prescription <span id=\"urn:enhancement-235dc521-9bf1-43d7-bbdb-b8687acf97f3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> drugs in the United States. The three <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4ba21618-fbc1-4df6-b79d-db7db8d240dd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> drugs approved by the FDA are known as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f0e54025-9ef1-45ef-9f08-be3b1c2a2ed1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neuraminidase\">neuraminidase<\/span> inhibitors and are available as treatment options for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0fb7fc86-f989-46ca-a7c9-eb72c1b7cb94\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> season 2017-2018. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cb69b678-9406-4cf7-8152-37c9c4a772e8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neuraminidase\">neuraminidase<\/span> inhibitors are oral <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7b2f5969-9c13-44c9-98f6-aaf73b172a25\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/oseltamivir\">oseltamivir<\/span>, inhaled <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e9c8a325-452d-436d-982f-88ae73d233eb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/zanamivir\">zanamivir<\/span> and intravenous <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7233c060-5e0e-4762-9391-8a565cf20bfa\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/peramivir\">peramivir<\/span>. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cea18ebf-2d5e-4637-b6e0-1a683212954b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">Antiviral<\/span> drugs belonging to the class of medications called adamantanes are <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7f76d345-648c-4dc3-82f8-4bde46820b2b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amantadine\">amantadine<\/span> and rimatadine which are only active against <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d039d37e-7e33-4b56-9c8d-62bf91a7909a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A. Due to the high levels of resistance, adamantanes are not recommended for the treatment of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e50281e3-6c4f-4611-9f9d-cb65f60f8d6d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>. According to the CDC, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e17b3e69-1e7c-43cd-b34a-d7fff5f7402b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> treatment should be initiated;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As early as possible in the case of an either confirmed or suspected cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e1da1273-f037-4954-9d3a-0a1ff3b8313a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> infection particularly for hospitalized patients or presenting severe progression of the illness<\/li>\n<li>For individuals younger than 2 years and older than 65 years of age<\/li>\n<li>Within 48hours of illness onset for uncomplicated symptomatic outpatient<\/li>\n<li>Without the need for waiting for diagnostic results particularly among the high risk groups such as pregnant women<\/li>\n<li>Patients with health problems such as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e3dc860a-d7cc-44d8-8783-a4a667cb8bf9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/asthma\">asthma<\/span>, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, neurodevelopmental conditions, kidney or liver disorders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\">Treatment Duration or Chemoprophylaxis Treatment: It is recommended for duration of 5 days for oral <span id=\"urn:enhancement-05209d07-22cf-4213-a7a8-9bdd6a8f8e95\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/oseltamivir\">oseltamivir<\/span> and inhaled <span id=\"urn:enhancement-122f054e-6fe5-4703-b5e2-88542ce6b76d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/zanamivir\">zanamivir<\/span> although longer duration is recommended for severely ill patients. In the case of an uncomplicated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-abcc443d-2404-4ece-be78-c497d0c64844\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>, a single dose of intravenous <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3bd21ec3-7ab0-4f0d-869a-44aaa5dd8ac7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/peramivir\">peramivir<\/span> is sufficient. The currently preferred oral <span id=\"urn:enhancement-809c9ecb-fece-4705-bec2-56da976f30bd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/oseltamivir\">oseltamivir<\/span> should be used for pregnant women or women up to two weeks postpartum. Chemo prophylaxis: after the last known exposure, the recommended duration is 7 days although in the case of outbreaks in institutional settings, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-333dd6a3-8647-452f-a7d0-a4cce0748409\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> chemoprophylaxis is recommended for a minimum of 2 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"4\"><strong>Influenza Vaccines Recommendations for 2018-2019<\/strong> According to the CDC\u2019s recommendation, individuals should get vaccinated by the end of October. As the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-90a7d380-20a0-464e-88d0-937288d0843a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bced499b-68dd-4a8e-ac02-8a8735eab8a8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> are constantly changing, the composition of the vaccines are reviewed and updated to effectively target the circulating <span id=\"urn:enhancement-268ddd17-1988-4473-a048-d7fd5e61fdc6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> for the season.\u00a0 The three component vaccines contain; A\/Michigan\/45\/2015 (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-76d513de-eaba-465e-b8c9-41660a9cda75\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span>)pdm09-like virus, A\/Singapore\/INFIMH-16-0019\/2016 A(<span id=\"urn:enhancement-f29ccd49-a6bd-4351-90f9-ce7f97dd0f4a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h3n2\">H3N2<\/span>)- like virus (updated) and N\/Colorado\/06\/2017-like (Victoria lineage) virus (updated). The options of vaccine shots for this season include the standard dose flu shots, high-dose shots, shots made with adjuvant, live attenuated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-99b2c0fd-f2b5-4c73-82f7-f358899ed8b2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccine (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-a8e8d090-53aa-4efa-9646-b8da3aafc5cd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/flumist\">LAIV<\/span>) and shots made with virus grown in cell culture. CDC and its vaccines advisory committee (ACIP) recommends that the health care providers use the age-appropriate <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c0c55c13-2266-4e7b-a931-435a30dc9241\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccine with no preference expressed for one vaccine over another.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Standard dose flu shots<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7129613f-6df0-4c78-89ea-2b17e7baa13b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> season of 2017-2019, CDC recommends the use of vaccine such as inactivated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-23739f61-6469-4e31-8347-a0546b5f7cb6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> (IIV), recombinant <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cd159e96-072e-44b7-8ef9-b9650a92304c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccine (RIV) or live attenuated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4a4ad24f-1cc7-459a-93bd-8e735f46c651\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccine (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-4aacd464-76b0-4a47-8880-cc52e188d7f3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/flumist\">LAIV<\/span>). The trivalent <span id=\"urn:enhancement-65898f2b-f1d0-4983-9932-c5a72645b956\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccines includes standard-dose trivalent flu shot (IIV3) , a high-dose trivalent flu shot, a trivalent flu shot made with adjuvant and a recombinant vaccine. The standard quadrivalent vaccines include the standard-dose, a quadrivalent cell-based flu shot and a recombinant quadrivalent flu shot.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High dose shots<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span id=\"urn:enhancement-3a2c4e72-f3a8-4f04-be3f-1c99c60af4d8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/fluzone\">Fluzone<\/span> High-Dose is a trivalent inactivated vaccine to be administered for people over the age of 65 that contains <span id=\"urn:enhancement-65417cd6-6860-426d-85d2-5d7e1a57cbbe\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antigen\">antigen<\/span> four times more than the standard inactivated vaccine to provide better immune response. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that this high dose shots are 24.2% more effective than the standard dose.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shots made with Adjuvant<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a standard-dose, trivalent inactivated vaccine that has an adjuvant and is only licensed for people older than 65 years of age but not recommended for those with a history of severe <span id=\"urn:enhancement-314f7d33-eb39-49ce-b4ff-7326cec2b1f1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/allergic\">allergic<\/span> reaction to the flu shot or to the components other than the eggs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shots made with virus grown in cell culture<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A cell-based vaccine that is developed in cultured cells of mammalian origin as an alternative to the egg-based process of developing the shots. This is more effective giving better protection than the egg-based vaccines because of its similarity to the flu <span id=\"urn:enhancement-563dd699-f9a6-4aaf-bfa0-dd703a9ec9d7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Live attenuated Influenza vaccine (LAIV)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the nasal flu vaccines has four flu <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7243daa0-442e-42e1-80f6-4e70838beaed\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span>: an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-24b8a875-a011-4afc-b109-30618cbeb3b4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A(<span id=\"urn:enhancement-f6b27ac4-5cef-464c-8625-3dbe7bed6737\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span>) virus, an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-683da5a6-ba1d-4e76-80d8-6b542591836b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-75549b3f-aa70-4730-99cd-bbba8ac6c3e8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h3n2\">H3N2<\/span>) virus and two <span id=\"urn:enhancement-effc8c78-5684-4c66-9a30-fc6f8ec93cce\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> B <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2e630bcc-f6cb-4dff-9875-4df52483e9ae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span>. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fea1ee8f-5e0f-4493-a8ea-935decce3489\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/flumist\">LAIV<\/span> is recommended for non-pregnant people from the age of 2 to 49 years of age. It is not recommended for those with a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7bdb9870-db7d-45d2-95c5-2499d8c928f2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/weakened-immune-system\">weakened immune system<\/span>, an asthmatic condition and with other medical conditions who can develop serious flu related complications.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recombinant Flu Vaccine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is an egg-free vaccine and the Flublok quadrivalent recombinant vaccine that is licensed for use among people over the age of 18. This vaccine has shorter shelf life than the other <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5eb4ff12-e512-481e-95a5-d8c4a61eedd0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"5\">Initiating a Strong <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3a4f3a95-5252-4cc2-a82d-73ebac322a65\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Vaccine Recommendation The use of SHARE is recommended by the CDC so the health care professionals can help ensure the public receive their vaccines by identifying their concerns and addressing it.
