In the last century, four novel strains of the viruses have emerged each responsible for a global pandemic. One of the notably worst <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bea21d0b-2114-456b-adc7-860ff99a669e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> recorded historically was in 1918 causing around 546,000 excess deaths in the United States alone and an estimated 50 million people worldwide. And, the first pandemic of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century caused by the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1f01199c-7156-4ed6-8445-5a8ed8d827c1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dbbb519d-ad70-47d8-92dc-2e1ca28cd411\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> virus has resulted in approximately 151,700 to 575,400 deaths globally during the time it circulated in the first year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">For decades, World Health Organization has also continued the surveillance of the viruses involving several generations of renowned <span id=\"urn:enhancement-caf48f30-948f-4c7e-8e8f-c9cefe118ad1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> scientists\u2019, yet, it still is a great challenge among the scientific community and continues to remain a threat to humans. In an effort to reduce the number of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0e536b1e-afd7-470f-8f0b-0a12f2d40a6e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>-related illness and its associated deaths globally, WHO twice a year organizes consultations with various experts from WHO Collaborating Centers (CCs), Essential Regulatory Laboratories (ERLs) and other partners to make the recommendations on <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5b7b2adf-d89b-4fa0-9515-62e803bfc8b9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccine composition. In order to combat <span id=\"urn:enhancement-462bfeb5-70b6-43f0-b55b-e731ac6b216a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>, various surveillance systems and centers were developed that both monitors and provides information about the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-47f9c99f-4eb3-4e91-9795-8d8f2f3e6d10\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> viruses which can be used by the health researchers for the development of a vaccine with high efficacy and also by acting a source for the development of a novel anti-<span id=\"urn:enhancement-527e5a58-623b-4795-8933-dab3ab7c5ba0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> treatments in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\">2009 Pandemic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-71139ad1-39c2-4a8b-9bbe-59d0bfdc5e67\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mexican-flu\">Swine Flu<\/span> It is believed to have emerged from Mexico in April 2009 and within weeks, the disease has spread over 30 countries and by July, it was reported in 122 countries. On 11 June 2009, WHO declared a global <span id=\"urn:enhancement-75e1472d-4e46-4536-900b-6ac7ea3cc83c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> pandemic which officially was over in August 2010. According to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8d4d1481-df16-4655-b306-f9083864a23e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">CDC<\/span>, the virus is believed to be the result from reassortment which involves a process where two or more <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6cd20c58-2219-47ad-b7f8-747654c83a69\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> viruses can exchange genetic information by infecting an individual or an animal host. This form of abrupt major changes in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d251a44c-5c5f-4ddd-a8ef-06c2e3ff2d75\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> viruses is known as \u2018<span id=\"urn:enhancement-b8a7605f-26fb-4f21-a359-51ba788142de\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antigenic-shift\">antigenic shift<\/span>\u2019 meaning most of the people have little or no protection against the new virus. As this form of genetic mixing can result in the emergence of viruses that can potentially cause pandemic among humans, the need for better surveillance of the virus among pigs and other animals are needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"4\">Future Pandemic Preparedness Even with the current knowledge, predicting the future pandemic is not entirely possible including when and where it will occur or what the subtype will be. WHO has developed a guidance document on Pandemic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a22877d5-226b-47aa-88a8-0b7f14063b05\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Preparedness and Response that provides information such as situation monitoring and assessment, planning and executing a preparedness exercise, reducing the spread of the disease, rapid containment training package and recommends actions before, during and after a pandemic. Also, the Global <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4133a496-126c-424d-8121-c60bebe0b7e2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) and the Pandemic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bea66f7e-98d0-4e7d-8d89-e12cd72e02f7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Preparedness Framework will assist various countries for the access of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e7e80f03-a4b3-41d7-8592-7be5d036cc45\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> drugs, vaccines and prepare for the management of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-40b15b15-b595-4e87-ae50-60d31f3273f4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span>. <strong>In the Future: Universal Flu vaccine?<\/strong> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-926a5d4e-f2ea-41ca-b184-293907857617\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immunization\">Immunization<\/span> against <span id=\"urn:enhancement-18e37c87-0528-4336-bf83-bbb083408e4a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> is an important public health intervention in order to prevent, control and manage both the seasonal flu and pandemic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-34f60be7-ef05-48bc-b2a7-17f50c50904c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>.\u00a0 Because of the constantly evolving nature of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c51e7cf7-1db6-4abc-ad3e-75bbbf645d89\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> viruses, global monitoring is essential for the reformulation of the vaccine components. The production of vaccine takes around 6 months and according to WHO\/Europe, the two types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1209e303-cea4-4ac9-8e87-47ce0de2d5e2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccine available are the inactivated vaccines (IIV) and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4f48eca8-c7dc-40b1-9428-8a9cd6a72986\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/live-attenuated-vaccines\">live attenuated<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cd2e940a-e05a-444b-afd4-5a1b64e1c030\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> vaccines (LAIV).\u00a0 However, researchers across the globe and at the University of Rochester Medical Center are developing a \u2018universal\u2019 flu shot that can offer protection against all seasonal and pandemic strains of the virus. The report suggests that the most promising strategies are creating a vaccine that targets the \u2018stalk\u2019 of a protein enveloping the virus. The \u2018stalk\u2019 of the virus appears to be relatively constant and by directing a vaccine and the immune response of the body towards the stalk could provide a broad protection against the infection. <strong>Anti-<span id=\"urn:enhancement-759ef642-e27e-4d7a-8eab-4a386c1ae68c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Treatment<\/strong> During the late 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century, antivirals were developed to treat <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0b7fa1ae-8f77-454f-987d-467b71e11cbf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>. In 1964, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c82aa040-b607-44fe-9634-c7c5db9b4fd1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amantadine\">amantadine<\/span> as an inhibitor of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2fb60eed-70c7-4540-a5c3-3a691321c8d5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> was reported which provided the basis for the recent development of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d71c40c9-e155-428c-ac88-a7ef16767da6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neuraminidase\">neuraminidase<\/span> inhibitors. The current anti-<span id=\"urn:enhancement-e3bd8c1c-5f93-49f4-b637-33b6f3790387\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> drugs are the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5e823e67-3f20-4d60-9055-568b5fc72e54\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neuraminidase\">neuraminidase<\/span> (NA) inhibitors (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2683f39-2ecf-453f-b1a3-4d60765f5a39\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/oseltamivir\">Oseltamivir<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0bc5ba30-0da3-45eb-81a5-b9f4c57778a9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/zanamivir\">Zanamivir<\/span>) and M2 ion-channel inhibitors <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5286bae3-edcb-4f86-9a94-c4508bbfe996\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amantadine\">amantadine<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3ecdac5e-7897-40ea-bb7a-5d74046677cf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/rimantadine\">rimantadine<\/span>. However, the efficacies of these drugs are declining as the drug-resistant variants of virus continue to emerge and clearly, the development of a novel <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a66abe72-f913-4981-93a8-980c501f10f4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> drug remains essential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emerging trends in drug development<\/strong> <strong>FDA approved new drug for the treatment of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eedd293e-045d-4993-8940-f6524dbe52ca\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span><\/strong>: After nearly 20 years, U.S <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3d2ad368-d8d7-41c8-8d4f-c08c0b363b2b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/food-and-drug-administration\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span> approved Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil) for the treatment of acute uncomplicated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b631f12b-2416-4a6c-ab0d-2c8bd5961945\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>. It can be used for individuals 12 years or older and when treatment is initiated within 48 hours, it can reduce the symptoms and the duration of the illness. The safety and efficacy of the drug were demonstrated in two randomized controlled <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fa25e099-43fa-4452-b1ae-9f5816f48e4c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/clinical-trial\">clinical trials<\/span> of 1,832 individuals who either received a Xofluza, a placebo or another <span id=\"urn:enhancement-da6278ba-7e53-4307-b8f8-00833a016d4b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antiviral\">antiviral<\/span> drug within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
