More than 58772 specimens were tested and 2124 showed positive for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c046ba64-d7b0-4d5b-90f3-fc847561e0bd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ca5d9a71-4692-4329-aa8d-20fa2bb42a99\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> while <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ebd28eb3-910e-456e-9361-141b2a5091df\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A was reported at 84.2% and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-73277705-0034-4c6f-ba70-1f95deb1af20\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> B at 15.8%. Of the subtypes <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e2af98f0-e955-4bb0-9d3a-ec6b03e7bfea\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d400ffc3-d91b-4416-b950-772778317b79\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span>, 74% accounted for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0bb4e6b1-cddb-47eb-adc5-674fa3d2cd3c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A(<span id=\"urn:enhancement-e4b6f877-5163-419c-b643-3c39b302fc1e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span>)pdm09, 26% were <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eae1d410-e712-4c0a-816d-63efa93e9f93\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A(<span id=\"urn:enhancement-5ccf0cd5-d0a7-4287-9c56-0199e686c0f7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h3n2\">H3N2<\/span>) and for B <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6f80e11b-d51b-49f9-8060-b87b989aefa6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> 49% belonged to the B-Yamagata lineage and 51% to the B-Victoria lineage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">Overview of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-481fe2ad-4eaf-4d6e-b13e-90dc87b2695d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Surveillance in the United States The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9130d1ab-4083-4a5b-b6d8-4a7b71cecb82\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> season is determined by the flu activity which varies from season to season with the activity starting to increase in October, peaking in December to February and continuing into May. For <span id=\"urn:enhancement-73299a2d-44a4-4d7c-85ae-1982f1d49af7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">CDC<\/span>, the reporting period for each season starts during Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) week 40 and finishing week 39 of the following year. For the year 2018-2019, the season started on September 30, 2018, ending on September 28, 2019. As <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7ba6ad43-ab15-4a8c-8660-633895483115\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> is not a reported disease, the total number of people affected by it is not exactly known. However, the surveillance of the flu-related illness is conducted by the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cbeb8680-efd3-49cd-a9dc-fd8fe20b132c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">CDC<\/span> through Outpatient <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b647ddfd-594c-4d98-85ee-1dfea4d8f02e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span>-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) and Flusurv-Net which procures the information on outpatient illness and on hospitalizations. In order to determine the burden of flu illness in the United States, a mathematical modeling is used in combination with the traditional flu surveillance systems. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2d836b19-ea1c-4ac8-949a-f9b987a1f50b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">CDC<\/span> collects information from different data sources to find out the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-341281a4-be78-4178-b3c6-003265c0dd92\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity that is occurring, thereby monitoring <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0e301bb6-82e2-4fd2-84e7-b08df92f27d6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>-related illness, the types of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f9834811-74cb-41fb-996d-fa44661c676e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c12f80c8-8b8b-4243-9355-bef2fbb756e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> circulating, monitoring the changes of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-56a9d70f-6915-4998-b812-5d9ff8cc2a09\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> and measuring the impact of the illness on hospitalizations and deaths. According to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-00ba244f-274b-4951-968b-2ce5aee290e8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">CDC<\/span> estimates, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-84e868f1-02fa-4658-b2df-77164a81d11a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> has resulted in around 9.3 million \u2013 49.0 million illnesses, between 140,000 \u2013 960,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 \u2013 79,000 deaths every year since 2010.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/411.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"3\">2018 \u2013 2019 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4c7b5880-2bab-459d-a000-db4bfba4de2e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Season Week 42 Although in the United States, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e9900d23-224a-4786-a771-6e67659b54b8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity continues to remain low, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-288e60d1-9c35-4cd6-a0c0-5aca9af05646\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> A(<span id=\"urn:enhancement-846fe027-9a6c-4329-a32d-a4fc5d13720e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span>)pfm09 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-374ed777-5a9d-4390-add4-c399ae835a8c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> are identified as the most commonly circulating <span id=\"urn:enhancement-778a2524-8450-49cb-96a1-57b87cd69faf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> by the public health laboratories. State health departments are responsible for reporting the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-47ba9af9-8b57-4c54-9c22-0f8d995091e4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity in their states every week through the State and Territorial Epidemiologists Reports. The state reports the activity of the illness as; <strong><em>No activity<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 No laboratory-confirmed cases and no increase in the cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4b73bd9b-e19b-4dd6-93c0-a614b8678aac\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>-like illness (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-b284ea74-28c3-491f-b374-77d2a0185b62\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ili\">ILI<\/span>). <strong><em>Sporadic<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Either a single or a few-laboratory confirmed cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2a82afd2-4239-41b9-8e4c-1fbd9cb2da2b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> but no increase in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b88b0a76-b652-4e47-8b81-76f8fbc0db71\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ili\">ILI<\/span> cases. <strong><em>Local<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8b7f8125-45bb-46c9-8436-94f989f09e50\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/outbreaks\">Outbreaks<\/span> of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-65483f01-03a3-4442-84de-585cf3fcaeea\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> or the number of cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2c484ebe-cfec-482a-bf48-f9ed1e23446d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ili\">ILI<\/span> has increased and laboratory-confirmed cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-30de5f08-0a75-411f-b330-e5036479b583\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> in a single region of the state. <strong><em>Regional<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-12a2be3d-fedb-40f6-97e0-0f54b68da5a4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/outbreaks\">Outbreaks<\/span> of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d148b3ae-8cd9-4751-9850-839ac9032ec6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> or increase in the number of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bcf916b0-33c8-4b56-9b61-1f1ea20aca20\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ili\">ILI<\/span> cases and recent laboratory-confirmed cases in at least two but less than half the regions of the state. <strong><em>Widespread<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bb39ff91-9d07-4bf1-b481-348defc9ca1f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/outbreaks\">Outbreaks<\/span> of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5c368436-40c5-48c4-bafb-09127f1bb40f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> or increase in the number of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-63aa9f1f-e5bb-4715-8e5a-1288311dddb7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ili\">ILI<\/span> cases and recent laboratory confirmed in at least half the regions of the state.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"4\">Geographic spread of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6f122793-76fd-448b-b4d9-01e21c860c7d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> For the current <span id=\"urn:enhancement-00e346ab-d7f6-46be-85d0-2ed072954fdb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> season 2018 \u2013 2018, week 42, the following <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f5c3c2d1-76a0-4044-9e84-9a5ea7c4482c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity was reported;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Local <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8e7f970c-4cf8-4724-9703-d5f54c85e38c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span><\/em><\/strong> reported in four states namely Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Oregon.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Sporadic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-84d6dc78-7d0c-440a-9ba6-a16f75f6b156\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span><\/em><\/strong> reported in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 42 states namely; Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.<\/li>\n<li>No <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7fdd9207-fa45-492b-a523-d3fc8ae76577\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity was reported by Illinois, Mississippi, Rhode Island and Virginia.<\/li>\n<li>Guam did not report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"5\">In this brief, we now look at some details of the weekly <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0ac9bba6-d8b0-472e-8f06-6ccb1e26f1ea\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> report by the four states presenting local <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bd9327cd-7971-42ef-839c-2f5cf15eb0fb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> activity. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>North Dakota<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the North Dakota Department of Health, the data collection for the season 2018- 2019 began on August 1, 2018, now continuing to week 42 of the current season. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-56d03cca-6c7b-4fe8-a9cf-cfedfd717406\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> case count indicates a total of 122 numbers. The number of cases affected by Type A 2009 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7c2acf8d-0e7c-4d3a-816a-f3a15476be1f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/h1n1\">H1N1<\/span> virus is 13, Type A H3 is 2, Type A unspecified at 84 and Type B unspecified as 23 cases. The case statistics show a total of 4 hospitalized cases and the age group most affected were children under 10 years accounting for 59 cases. The county Benson shows the most affected number of cases accounting to a total of 49 cases followed by county Ramsey with a total of 21 cases. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/413.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"351\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oregon<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e69bafff-bb5b-442b-a7f3-fe14322b0b7b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> Surveillance data from the Oregon Health Authority, for the current <span id=\"urn:enhancement-756a8739-4214-4f57-9143-eb71bbac6286\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span> season 2018 \u2013 2019, week 41 data shows that the percentage of emergency department visits for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-af85ce94-4332-44e2-9444-6153e87d5d89\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ili\">ILI<\/span> was at 0.9% and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-96786f8d-17b4-4975-9c3a-6aac453ca099\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>-associated hospitalization was only 1. Of the total of 854 specimens tested at the labs, 10 (1.2%) showed positive specimens of which 100% of them were caused by <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4e4f238b-e1f0-44d6-a611-d79e5b0fd8d0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span> type A.
