Generally, the ovarian cancer develops at the age of 40 but most develop after the age of 60. It is a difficult disease to treat and because of the absence of early warning signs, most of the cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease presenting poor prognosis. However, with the progression in the surgical procedure and with the advent of new drugs entering the clinic, it has become a chronic disease instead. But, if detected in the initial stage, about 90% of affected individuals could be cured.<\/p>\n<p>The ovaries are made up of three forms of cells and hence the different types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-13daac06-1c6e-486e-9b3d-30f5d590a22f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span>; epithelial tumors, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6fbfbc7e-98f9-4be5-9b9d-f31dde350c90\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/germ-cell-tumors\">germ cell tumors<\/span> and stromal tumors. Although most of the epithelial tumors are <span id=\"urn:enhancement-229762ec-f5dc-4ac3-9a4b-29ddd621ada8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/benign\">benign<\/span>, an estimated 85% of all ovarian <span id=\"urn:enhancement-20a9ccbb-247d-4606-a4e6-0511334b187c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancers<\/span> are of epithelial ovarian carcinomas. Also, the advances illustrated the significant role for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b78056e8-1202-45c9-8909-3773a203d4fe\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brca\">BRCA<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e0d110cb-a34f-4b85-8ebe-01efa0157107\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/gene\">gene<\/span> and the genetic screening for these <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1807892a-506b-4861-9c49-0bd1c94dba99\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mutations\">mutations<\/span> has resulted in improved preventative measures and accordingly the therapeutic development. The pap tests are not useful for the prediction of ovarian cancer but are only for the detection of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b19bfe4e-9a7f-4dc7-90a5-95183c10e052\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cervical-cancer\">cervical cancer<\/span> and in a rare case, an advanced stage of ovarian cancer could be found. Therefore, an early identification of this disease could result in a better prognosis.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\"><strong>Genetic Contribution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the genetic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-07f58906-448d-4d6c-85e2-173a33328bac\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mutations\">mutations<\/span> associated with ovarian cancer are sporadic meaning they are acquired and not inherited. In around half of the somatic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f4de53b0-00ce-42ad-b12b-e500126ce1b7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mutations\">mutations<\/span> responsible for ovarian cancer, a mutation in the TP53 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a5893955-7fc3-47ba-8210-0da4416cc834\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/gene\">gene<\/span> is responsible. The protein produced by this <span id=\"urn:enhancement-820c26e5-1a6f-4609-9db3-af102b1d5088\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/gene\">gene<\/span> are called <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b3f57262-124d-4d8f-a6e4-ca0e13268f12\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> suppressor and the mutation either reduces or eliminates the function to suppress <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8163326c-eddf-4e05-bacc-55c22171bc5f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> growth. The inherited cause of ovarian cancer is the result of the mutation in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8ef5636f-cf79-4ffc-93c4-77dc549fa79b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brca1\">BRCA1<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-64e8774f-257b-4ba3-b4a0-040a422bc74f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brca2\">BRCA2<\/span> which impairs <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f118bd22-d196-42f1-a52c-7d9fc54ac712\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dna-repair\">DNA repair<\/span> allowing the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-57769741-9801-4294-9d91-ed20d7631b2a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mutations\">mutations<\/span> to continue thus triggering <span id=\"urn:enhancement-60f8c749-1b8b-4bbf-8461-8d845ba2075d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> growth. The relationship of a woman developing ovarian cancer in her lifetime is around 1.6% compared to 40 to 60% risk among those with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b952c70b-9bd9-4d39-8c3d-e86555bd6236\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brca1\">BRCA1<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-33191ba4-0077-47c3-96d8-36162f613761\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/gene\">gene<\/span> mutation and 20 to 35% for those with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ccca5e06-eb3f-448e-ba84-145139c48c98\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brca2\">BRCA2<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-073ae08c-403d-4b3f-b987-2fdb77d0569f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/gene\">gene<\/span> mutation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0New Types of Oral Contraceptives Associated with Reduced Risk of Ovarian <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2b366f52-ef68-44d8-8013-2acad4b44a46\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a study published in the BMJ, the new types of oral contraceptives with lower doses of oestrogens and newer progestogens are associated with reduced risk of ovarian cancer. This now serves as a reassurance among women where around 100 million of them are using <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3016f4d3-ce8f-4248-99e8-40627fd0f936\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hormonal-contraception\">hormonal contraceptives<\/span>. The study analyzed the data of around 1.9 million Danish women in the age group of 15-49 between the years 1995 \u2013 2014. The research shows that the cases of ovarian cancer were the highest among those who had never used oral <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b7568f16-d0e7-4150-9df0-bd389d233d81\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hormonal-contraception\">hormonal contraceptives<\/span> and that the use of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4da99183-291a-46ba-862b-40ac0c817410\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hormonal-contraception\">hormonal contraception<\/span> prevented an estimated 21% of ovarian <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6f155563-935c-46f4-a338-4ef072058f44\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancers<\/span> among this study population.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4\"><strong>Advances in the Treatment of Ovarian <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0da43df9-78cb-40ac-a006-86cd9d93ae1f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the current treatment options for epithelial ovarian cancer includes surgery and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0853c584-669f-4864-8eb3-1fd7d6a2781c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antitumor\">chemotherapy<\/span>, it can result in complete remission and the recurrence rate also appears to be high. Currently, there are several new drugs under development and are being tested in clinical trials to determine their efficacy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Checkpoint inhibitor <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0cbe5959-232d-44c8-881e-2c7ee251a42a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immunotherapy\">immunotherapy<\/span> drugs could be an option for some of the women with ovarian cancer. A phase 2 study analyzed the efficacy of Keytruda (pembrolizumab) for women with advanced recurrent ovarian cancer. Patients with a higher combine positive score (CPS), i.e., more PD-L1 protein in their tumors, had a better rate of response.<\/li>\n<li>FDA granted regular approval for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e7bb9c14-265f-4cc5-bb8e-d1f4d41cb41c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/olaparib\">olaparib<\/span> (Lynparza) for maintenance therapy of women with germline <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6a07cdff-78b5-42a9-80fe-a337e0aacb92\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brca\">BRCA<\/span>-mutated advanced ovarian cancer. Poly (ADP-ribose) <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7ad54fee-161d-4c79-922b-b788d493d822\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/polymerase\">polymerase<\/span> (PARP) is a protein that the cancer cells depend on to keep DNA healthy and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ad320a4d-cc09-41c3-8d75-fabfbc3deb8f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/olaparib\">olaparib<\/span> inhibits PARP from repairing DNA damage and it results in the death of cancer cells.<\/li>\n<li>Mirvetuximab soravtansine is currently in a phase III study and being compared with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-01c5f7fd-faee-43de-a8df-094c53a92914\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antitumor\">chemotherapy<\/span> in platinum-resistant ovarian cancer and has emerged as a promising investigational agent. The initial findings have shown it can be safely combined with combinatorial partners and therefore plays an important role for patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"5\"><strong>Screening Guidelines for Ovarian <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3a0d252e-d68f-4c7e-9237-69117409f4e4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As ovarian cancer does not normally present any symptoms in the initial stage of the disease, the research still continues to determine the best screening test. Currently, the two tests used are a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e3ddbfda-19a2-4317-9ea7-d8ba5726e84f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/transvaginal-ultrasound\">transvaginal ultrasound<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6213e40f-139e-4c2a-a09d-a99f2e35a981\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ca-125\">CA-125<\/span> blood test to determine ovarian cancer. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-32e0620b-4853-4969-ae68-e0b17f313fda\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/transvaginal-ultrasound\">transvaginal ultrasound<\/span> can detect a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4b4813c5-ec01-41eb-af68-c1428174af81\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0205f129-61e5-4f83-86fe-72220a55d6f9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ovary\">ovary<\/span> but cannot differentiate between cancer or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7f105248-ab86-4b85-bf18-7c7a18cf52f4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/benign\">benign<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6c31460e-d563-429c-befd-103553292041\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> and in most of the cases, the masses are noncancerous. A blood test measures the quantity of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-61051143-3073-48ee-b58d-1e5985cdd1f1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ca-125\">CA-125<\/span> protein in the blood and most of the women with ovarian cancer present high levels of this protein. However, as women with other conditions such as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9eae030d-642e-460c-9942-bc8ee61af6c2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pelvic-inflammatory-disease\">pelvic inflammatory disease<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ff8ebb0e-2370-48a5-9b3d-119cee574233\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/endometriosis\">endometriosis<\/span> also show high-level of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-16ff8afd-fa5a-45fa-a43d-e19beea8bd63\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ca-125\">CA-125<\/span>, a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-584c570c-9f5c-4351-b6cc-f7b118b3a520\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/transvaginal-ultrasound\">transvaginal ultrasound<\/span> test may be recommended to determine the cause. According to the US Preventive Service Task Force (USPSTF), screening for ovarian cancer can present many false-positive results leading to an unnecessary surgical intervention for those without cancer. Also, the diagnostic guidelines recommend the surgical removal of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2a0ac11a-1470-4d4c-b59a-00f8ba815637\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ovary\">ovary<\/span> to determine whether ovarian cancer is present rather than the tissue biopsy. Hence, USPSTF recommends against screening for asymptomatic women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0The Promise of a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9b546a39-f691-4142-a5d3-66885b555750\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">Vaccine<\/span> for Ovarian <span id=\"urn:enhancement-528d77c8-1a81-4eb4-b58b-449a2a05acb2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a new small trial, a personalized cancer <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4ae491e2-e68f-48c5-b46a-703658934ec8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> is considered to be capable of inducing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-191ca2fb-197c-44cc-b52f-f490415842d6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/antitumor\">antitumor<\/span> T-cell immunity among women with recurrent ovarian cancer. This <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3d6d28e3-398f-4444-89c7-11070ebb7064\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> is developed using autologous <span id=\"urn:enhancement-66a94c4b-5fbd-4f83-bf5b-6701c8ac7bef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dendritic-cells\">dendritic cells<\/span> pulsed with autologous <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5e02f56f-432a-4e01-947e-56d9696f27f6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> lysate. The pilot study involved 25 patients with recurrent advanced epithelial ovarian cancer and the result of the study was published in Science Translational Medicine. A total of 392 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-08dc4287-81df-44b3-862e-f24f6b12e1e5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> doses were administered which were well tolerated by the patients.
