The reason, as some of you might already know, the failure of solanezumab in large-scale <span id=\"urn:enhancement-51a0f345-2c20-4a84-a206-aa91061fd7e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/clinical-trial\">clinical trials<\/span>. The drug was perceived as a promise for almost a decade for treating\u00a0<span id=\"urn:enhancement-b68d9e62-802b-4a34-a06c-807e7e2ca74f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/alzheimers\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alzheimers-disease-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alzheimers-disease-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alzheimers-disease-370x296.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Alzheimers-disease.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The focus of the drug was to delay slowing of symptoms in patients afflicted with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2618059a-6e9f-447a-910d-78b7d3af3c74\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/alzheimers\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span>. To express it in tangible\/monetary terms, the failure also means $1 billion into thin air. However, Eli Lilly is not the first company to taste failure in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c77bd390-b98e-4741-9524-37b5768c382c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/alzheimers\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span> drug discovery front.<\/p>\n<h3>Disappointments aside, what\u2019s going wrong in drug discovery front for Alzheimer\u2019s?<\/h3>\n<p>The new <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ca9bc1a1-3641-4f6d-ac49-0003dec299ae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pathology\">pathological<\/span> findings indicate that <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1f89f99c-d225-4fb4-ab36-ec184b184d00\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/alzheimers\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span> damage <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7596c67c-440a-44b9-9365-4f149e52ff3e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brain-cells\">brain cells<\/span> years before symptoms emerge. Pharma companies are mostly focused on targeting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a4eba80f-1882-48a9-ae72-d59801226715\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/amyloid\">amyloid<\/span> buildup. There are series of drugs on the way developed by different pharma companies trying the same as solanezumab.<\/p>\n<p>The only hope for the upcoming drug candidates is the difference in the mechanism to achieve the same objective.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"urn:enhancement-a25dde02-0ac5-48e3-8e7b-57c745bd4da3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/thomas-c-sudhof\">Thomas C. S\u00fcdhof<\/span>, professor of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cbead4de-9603-424c-92be-52958455adda\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neurosurgery\">neurosurgery<\/span>, psychiatry, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1a7abf3b-1f50-483c-a4b2-797901572cf6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neurology\">neurology<\/span>, and molecular and cellular physiology at Stanford University (Nobel Prize Winner in Medicine) observations about pharma companies are as follows: the pharmaceutical majors are known to invest in promising drug candidates, not on solving mysteries surrounding a disease.<\/p>\n<p>He insists on the importance of understanding the fundamental nature of a disease or a medical condition before channelizing drug discovery efforts. This requires efforts and investments in disease biology or basic sciences. In this case, he says, it is still a mystery on why memory is lost due to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-755737a2-82a0-491b-81d5-1d0204611d59\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/alzheimers\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span> disease.<\/p>\n<p>Very few genes carry out single functions and the complexity stems from the rest which is multitasking and participates in intricate networks. It is of paramount importance that the functions of these genes \u00a0needs to be understood before genes can be targeted for therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The professor adds in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/too-many-medical-trials-are-moonshots-in-the-dark\/2017\/01\/04\/a7d88102-c184-11e6-9578-0054287507db_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Washington Post Opinion<\/a> that no major advances have been made in the treatment of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ef3a93ba-4199-4c15-9866-11192ca5dbf7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neurological-condition\">brain disorders<\/span> for the past 50 years primarily due to lack of efforts in the field of brain chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>I sincerely hope his words are heard for a better world.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<div class=\"single-box single-tags\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Table of Contents 1.
