Conclusion: Progress made in developing Zika vaccine<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>An animated picture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/zika-virus\/\">zika virus<\/a> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4fce0e60-1220-4da4-b3cc-7d68da96dd61\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> which is commercially not available in the market right now.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In November 2016, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/zika\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a> declared that Zika <span id=\"urn:enhancement-abc532fd-a84f-44cf-b121-2cf27d83152b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infections<\/span> are here to stay like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/yellow-fever\/\">yellow fever<\/a> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-58091736-b149-4ee6-b820-4416d2f9cd92\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/malaria\">malaria<\/span>, also spread by mosquitoes.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/zika-virus-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/zika-virus-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/zika-virus.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>WHO\u2019s statements insist that the fight against the zika virus would take longer than expected as seasonality might return the illness from time to time, and also primarily due to unavailability of cure in the form of vaccines and specialized treatments. Much to the dismay of other public health experts and partners, WHO downgraded the status for Zika <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0a3dd710-6ca9-4bb9-bb48-2ba785506b04\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infections<\/span> as \u201congoing crisis\u201d from \u201cpublic health emergency of international concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By October 2016, It was identified that over 70 countries around the globe had reported cases of Zika <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4344fb5e-c8f5-49f5-96f5-a47b78e04933\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infections<\/span>. The scientific community embarked on a challenging journey about this relatively unknown virus that had become a huge health sensation in the last few years and published over 1500 scientific papers after extensive research. The studies confirmed that the virus infects both mothers and unborn children, kill <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1e012919-6dfa-4066-9e92-3cd063de71ca\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/brain-cells\">brain cells<\/span> and causing numerous abnormalities and health concerns such as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-20b8c8f9-2ee8-4adf-a62b-e86bf429d6a2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neural-tube-defects\">neural tube defects<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/conditions\/eye-abnormalities\/\">eye abnormalities<\/a>, hearing problems, irritability, seizures and feeding difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-99096f26-2105-4488-80a0-e97d2d492b00\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/nih\">National Institute of Health<\/span>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaid.nih.gov\/diseases-conditions\/zika-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases <\/a>(NIAID) is currently coordinating all efforts related to the development of most promising Zika <span id=\"urn:enhancement-812f64d0-a462-4af9-bdcc-55038f9e55ff\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> candidates.\u00a0The research team in the institute had engineered plasmids (circular pieces of DNA) that code for viral proteins. When the DNA <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2dcbabaf-00b7-4db7-9618-2000e0e3e3bd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> is injected into the muscle, the body cells inherit the ability to make Zika proteins and mount an immune response to the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-03ad8ec8-ee5c-432f-aac7-7a797c1f50f9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/foreign-bodies\">foreign bodies<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-be8701b4-8200-4734-80e8-713539009bb8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> candidates named VRC5283 and VRC5288 are engineered to prompt cell response to Zika <span id=\"urn:enhancement-95b60ea1-1002-4f09-9b5b-d2a22f27ea1a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infections<\/span> by producing the Zika virus structural proteins premembrane (prM) and envelope (E). The scientific merits and discussion related to these <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dd6c004e-94f9-43ea-9e0c-c6425153aeef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> candidates were published in the journal Science on September 22, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In trials, the research team vaccinated eighteen rhesus monkeys using both Zika <span id=\"urn:enhancement-222c506e-f5b1-42f2-acf2-7db513701bb6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dna-vaccines-2\">DNA vaccines<\/span> in different doses. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f58a911a-230c-4f74-a82e-630df2e26120\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immunity\">immunity<\/span> was conferred through two doses over eight weeks. 17 of 18 monkeys examined post exposure of Zika virus showed no detectable virus in their blood.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the scientists have begun their trials on human subjects to test a variety of regimens and doses for safety and immune responses. VRC5288 is currently tested as part of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dc85edf5-06f1-4325-a2bf-b5e3d290c2c5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/phase\">phase<\/span> 1 trial on volunteers in Maryland and Georgia. VRC5283 is awaiting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ef4377c2-1834-4f35-84f5-f032b70110c6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/phase\">Phase<\/span> 1 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-66ce27da-1079-4d47-8319-dde5eb5f8764\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/clinical-trial\">clinical trial<\/span>. It is interesting how rapidly the research institute has responded in moving this <span id=\"urn:enhancement-33472ed4-e812-41f2-9a61-3c788e885b98\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> from one <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d4ca6531-b9b4-4513-802e-8e0574860014\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/phase\">phase<\/span> to another.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Table of Contents 1.
