Folic Acid Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, highlights that the CDC and the U.S. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9527f4e9-2a28-4ae6-aa4e-eabd22b93d71\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/public-health-service\">Public Health Service<\/span> recommend that all women between the ages of 15 and 45 consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-70505d94-939a-44e2-a268-573a82bc9440\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> daily to prevent two types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-895a5a85-959c-44e3-ad18-9d81696d0f6d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neural-tube-defects\">neural tube defects<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ecf9c35c-78bf-4e73-a0f3-957c0b1db7bf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/spina-bifida\">spina bifida<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0e1936b1-9218-4eb6-b3d0-71d7c01995c9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/anencephaly\">anencephaly<\/span>. We ll discuss below in this article the significance of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6b2e5053-40aa-4961-80d0-866c7f1e355c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> with aim to build awareness among pregnant women\u2019s on the need and importance of taking <span id=\"urn:enhancement-88c12856-2bc9-419f-bdae-55d6666adad3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> during and before pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">Folic acid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Folate is available in different forms such as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-891aeec7-08f8-4cd9-9c78-a4d23e90cc64\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span>, vitamin B9 and folacin. Folic acid is also known as\u00a0Vitamin B9\u00a0or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-45322438-a844-4a51-8ac4-f4e954526637\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folate<\/span>, it is abundant in leafy greens such as spinach and is essential for optimal brain and nerve function. Folate helps support the adrenal function, helps in maintaining a healthy nervous system, and are necessary for key metabolic processes. Folate occurs naturally in foods, while <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7672f54c-6e1c-4da9-b114-a06b0555373c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> is the synthetic form of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e64a04e6-8371-47fb-b8d2-0ae887a774e7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folate<\/span>. Folate\u00a0plays an important role in the production of red blood cells and helps your baby&#8217;s neural tube develop into her brain and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-80919e59-6a5b-4e2c-be45-b33d59c6ea34\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/spinal-cord\">spinal cord<\/span>. Folic acid plays a preventive role in a range of conditions. If taken before and during early pregnancy, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0d7a0700-1da0-498d-9d81-968fb24d16f8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> can prevent up to 70% of some serious birth defects of the brain and spine, called <span id=\"urn:enhancement-542bc67f-87eb-4695-b728-f501d7827b1c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neural-tube-defects\">neural tube defects<\/span>. During the first month of pregnancy, the developing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-28cfe1a6-58e5-49b7-b8e8-c0294e00b3ae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/embryos\">embryo<\/span> grows a tissue structure called the \u2018neural tube\u2019. As the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cbaef774-c9a8-4a91-8815-abc56d2fa198\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/embryos\">embryo<\/span> develops, the neural tube begins to change into a more complicated structure of bones, tissue and nerves that will eventually form the spine and nervous system. However, in cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-337c451f-1094-45bc-90ac-b9b62c39cb74\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/spina-bifida\">spina bifida<\/span>, something goes wrong with the development of the neural tube and the spinal column (the ridge of bone that surrounds and protects the nerves) does not fully close. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-47052d6a-b033-4f26-8d9e-ce2f2152d594\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/spina-bifida\">Spina bifida<\/span> is a Latin term that means \u2018split spine\u2019. \u00a0<span id=\"urn:enhancement-90827818-726e-4e47-ae16-27570f2cccd0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/anencephaly\">Anencephaly<\/span> is a serious birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull. It is a type of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e6cc7331-121b-4aff-ba56-e08d36cfd232\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neural-tube-defects\">neural tube defect<\/span> (NTD). As the neural tube forms and closes, it helps form the baby\u2019s brain and skull (upper part of the neural tube), <span id=\"urn:enhancement-34cb3e9b-bf93-424c-be53-0e6a43d0bcbd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/spinal-cord\">spinal cord<\/span>, and back bones (lower part of the neural tube). <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0bab6ad1-efda-47b8-bc47-00de151849b7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/anencephaly\">Anencephaly<\/span> happens if the upper part of the neural tube does not close all the way. This often results in a baby being born without the front part of the brain (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-435ec30c-466c-475b-9547-8489c562bd8a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/forebrain\">forebrain<\/span>) and the thinking and coordinating part of the brain (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-6390ec04-a35b-4bac-a9fb-7d2ac8306548\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cerebrum\">cerebrum<\/span>). The remaining parts of the brain are often not covered by bone or skin.<\/p>\n<p>The chance that a pregnancy will be affected by a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1531c2df-190a-41dd-84a5-46ab197d305a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neural-tube-defects\">neural tube defect<\/span> is less than one in 1,000. About 2 thirds of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-495136a0-9baf-43d6-bb45-aa9fd6600100\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neural-tube-defects\">neural tube defects<\/span> can be prevented through increasing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f7029a3f-0a68-41bc-b67e-37765a1f543f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folate<\/span> (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-fe4e52ef-adca-4556-ac31-010ed1c9ddad\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span>) intake at least a month before pregnancy and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. In most cases pregnancy is not planned and women come to know about their pregnancy only after few weeks, these initial few weeks are very important for neural developments and hence it is imperative that women take a daily amount of 400 mcg <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e12f1d74-7da8-463a-a714-63d1f006a225\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> every day.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s important to take a multivitamin that contains <span id=\"urn:enhancement-553affb5-bce1-41a0-8df8-df2e565ce412\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span>, it\u2019s equally important to eat foods rich in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-04e07650-9059-4a2e-946a-c8b0758a252d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folate<\/span>. Our body can\u2019t store <span id=\"urn:enhancement-27d68c1a-30b1-4929-966b-8c599fd64cbd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folate<\/span> in the body since it\u2019s a water soluble vitamin, so we need to make sure that we ingest a regular amount of the vitamin B9 to keep our levels replenished.\u00a0The need for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8c8aa491-52ce-441e-93a6-ca8901b4912e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/folate\">folic acid<\/span> is increased by stress, smoking, use of alcohol and drugs, unhealthy dietary practices, shift work, illness, and demanding travel schedules.
