In the U.S alone, around 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually and around 4,000 deaths occur as the result.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">Therefore, in an effort to provide awareness to women about cervical health, January is recognized as Cervical Awareness Month by the National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC), a program of the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA). NCCC was founded in 1996 and is a growing coalition of individuals coping with cervical cancer and other Human <span id=\"urn:enhancement-481ffb94-318e-4a4b-b1f2-cef737621341\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/papillomavirus\">papillomavirus<\/span> (<span id=\"urn:enhancement-6c6fa71b-0452-4d5e-a48d-071b6e58cfc0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span>) related problems. This program consists of women, caregivers, health care providers, bio-tech companies and cancer researchers. It continues to urge every woman to make a resolution to discuss with their health care provider about cervical heath. \u00a0It also serves as an opportunity to share information about issues related to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ee19ab1b-cb6e-44f3-9d3a-374fecb885eb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> disease, cervical cancer and its early detection. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2abbde63-baf7-4bb3-86a8-0a2a8ca3c8bc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> is a common <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6c813e0c-6764-4a3e-99a2-985bbfdcbda7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infection<\/span> that spreads with sexual contact and is one of the major causes of cervical cancer which can be prevented with appropriate screening and with vaccination.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\">During the awareness month, NCCC continues to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of cervical cancer with regular cervical screenings. Also, according to ASHA, cervical cancer prevention requires both quality healthcare and comfort in talking about Sexual Health.<\/p>\n<p>Lynn Barclay, the president of ASHA says, \u201cThere is no single, simple solution to ending cervical cancer but it\u2019s clear it involves more than just quality health care. When it comes to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e54bd08c-1fa3-4350-ac68-657c56451ea4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/sexual-and-reproductive-health\">sexual and reproductive health<\/span>, we should be comfortable in our own skin, and have the confidence to seek the care and support we need. I urge every woman to talk with her health care provider about all the prevention tools we have at our disposal.\u201d And, a place to start is with ASHA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashasexualhealth.org\/sexual-health\/ten-questions-to-ask\/\">top ten questions that individuals can ask their healthcare provider about Sexual Health. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"4\">The need for a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2215ca12-a230-493b-9916-c063b7107f72\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> Vaccination<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Human <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e7120881-2deb-498f-9c6f-e66805b15b58\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/papillomavirus\">papillomavirus<\/span>, a very common group of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d358c789-16ad-4b65-a1ee-a958dc332e96\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span>, are transmitted through sexual contact. According to the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8ff1354f-2bdb-4695-b519-a0e47af8cf96\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span> (CDC), around 80 million people are currently infected in the United States and around 14 million people become infected annually. Although nearly all the cases of cervical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b4541d4e-b823-4594-b135-9d18342ef50e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancers<\/span> are attributed to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-318f4f56-365e-4222-85ea-63fe27008d67\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cffffd62-f6b6-4c90-9fc1-955e4a50a123\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infection<\/span>, there are around 13 cancer causing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2cb6f973-7463-4310-93bb-025afb503c45\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-de63d8a1-d5f5-4794-aeeb-9042e2ef7f31\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/viruses\">viruses<\/span> and the two types (16 and 18) account for 70% of cervical cancer and precancerous cervical lesions. In most of the cases, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bfb2d861-a846-4822-b5e3-be73897bc6f5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> infections do not cause any symptoms and tend to resolve on its own, however certain types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b55254e3-fc22-4668-90bf-2975359972c6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-aae1f0f0-c488-4a7c-9390-120b4c3b94f2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infection<\/span> could continue to persist leading to precancerous lesions and if left untreated, it can progress to cervical cancer. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-85f01f84-77d6-42df-9be5-082c8ad7ec16\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> vaccination is one of the most effective preventive methods that can protect against some of the common and the less common types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-25771eb9-1019-4a6b-abbd-eebe8ce30b7d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> types. However, study shows that the vaccines works best when administered before the exposure to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b29ba3ae-5927-4b79-8fea-1dd849f153aa\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> although it cannot treat <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c7c2d92e-92f0-4aae-90fe-ad2d4ff71e23\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-071d1a40-dfb1-4a70-8fee-bec7777b2b97\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/infection\">infection<\/span> or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5dd68b40-f24f-4680-94ed-8e2f58b1985f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span>-associated diseases. The WHO recommends <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d5bb6d80-46a5-4de1-b522-07a6fcc3589d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv-vaccine\">HPV vaccine<\/span> for girls aged 9-13 years and some countries also have initiated the vaccination for boys. In case they are not vaccinated at young age, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ee034647-bb7f-44ff-bae9-31693801d085\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/vaccine\">vaccine<\/span> is recommended for young women through age 26 and men through age 21.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"5\">Cervical Cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cervical cancer is a preventable condition with the current screening tests available. Also, if detected in the early stage, it is highly treatable with a long survival rate, but if left undetected, it has the potential to spread to the bladder, lungs, intestines and the liver. In most of the cases, it is not detected till the disease has reached an advanced stage. The symptoms also do not appear until cancer is advanced presenting unusual vaginal bleeding, abnormal discharge, heavy period and bleeding after <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c8d049a2-0f30-470e-aefe-536aa352eb6a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/menopause\">menopause<\/span>. Although there are various types of cervical cancer, around 80-90% are identified as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ebff2eba-e477-4253-a69d-b8574f537b5d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/squamous-cell-carcinoma\">squamous cell carcinoma<\/span> and adenocarcinoma is the second most common form of cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"6\">Understanding screening tests for Prevention of Cervical Cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are two screening tests that help prevent cervical cancer or could help detect it in its early stage of the disease. The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6b8c38a8-dc7f-4368-8446-ce200b187855\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pap-test\">Pap test<\/span> looks for cell changes on the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-14e2a981-463f-4ea6-a14e-525bdcb354a9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cervix\">cervix<\/span> that has the potential to become cervical cancer and the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8d19e488-4d90-46e3-9076-59d429a3dea9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">HPV<\/span> test helps detect the human <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3845d81d-7873-4757-ba69-dce0cff285d3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/papillomavirus\">papillomavirus<\/span> that causes cellular changes. According to NCCC, death rate continues to decline by 2% a year in the United States primarily because of the use of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2a39a89c-28fd-4033-9f62-514409e70b97\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pap-test\">Pap test<\/span> which allows for the early detection and treatment.
