It is considered a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-009120ab-9aa5-4d4b-96a1-aa308a3b10db\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hereditary-disease\">genetic disease<\/span> developing with a mutation in the genes that can either occur because it is inherited from parents or can also rise during an individual\u2019s lifetime as the result of damage to DNA. The three main types of genes affected are proto-oncogenes, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-403bca5a-c824-4c53-952c-77c94047fe3c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/tumor\">tumor<\/span> suppressor genes and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-730c6add-70e1-4583-9b5f-03facbaf7186\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dna-repair\">DNA repair<\/span> genes which contribute to the development of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-57028d63-73c3-4bce-b25d-58776dd74adc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>. The proto-oncogenes are involved in the normal process of cell growth and when it becomes affected, they become <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3a40d675-41ff-4cd8-9c02-37ad85bec667\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>-causing genes allowing for the abnormal growth of cells. The tumor suppressor genes are involved in controlling the cell growth and division and when they are altered, the cells grow in an uncontrolled manner. The DNA repair genes are responsible for fixing the damaged DNA and any <span id=\"urn:enhancement-31a41e17-4d8f-4351-ac34-f5ece98f784d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mutations\">mutations<\/span> in these genes could result in additional mutations in other genes thus causing the cells to become <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e106fa2a-969c-46f4-83bb-6862bd10acf0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancerous<\/span>. In 2012 alone, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bab1580c-fec2-4b78-a528-9a1788f3eb7c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> were diagnosed and 8.2 million <span id=\"urn:enhancement-875df777-2e25-42b3-ada6-9a472f24f969\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>-related deaths occurred worldwide.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\">According to the National <span id=\"urn:enhancement-769037d4-9010-4867-9c01-806eb3aada4a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span> Institute, in 2018, 1,735,350 new cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cb510ae7-6011-455b-aa70-800ebdd86563\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> was estimated to be diagnosed in the United States. In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents aged 0 to 19 were diagnosed with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-17ecb9d8-e487-4a43-8d04-9d19688982c3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>. However, the most common type of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ca44b1fc-360d-4c6b-bdee-903db43157f6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> is breast <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a93ea72c-7ac9-401e-8287-98c06fe4e6d5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> with an estimated 268,670 new cases expected in the United States in 2018. This is followed by lung <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e082f8c9-41e4-4153-9042-703d1cf7ba0e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>, prostate cancer and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-08fab720-0036-4a5d-b6ba-4b1349b1c18a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/colorectal\">colorectal<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-723f0990-5cc3-4176-ad4b-6ef07359b2a5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\">The World <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d1b9e746-0fa3-4f23-af63-1733f9e45683\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span> day celebrated each year on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> February is an initiative where the world can unite together to fight against the global <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a170859c-4c73-4378-999e-1fab29827e5d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> epidemic. The world <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b910a7eb-06ee-4321-a560-58c3db56603c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> day hopes to save the lives of people each year by raising awareness, to create a long-lasting impact, inspire change, providing education about <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c0f78d76-7e18-48b9-ac17-a37097b12cfd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> and encouraging individuals to take action against this disease. Communities around the world will also be conducting seminars, public information campaigns and events to educate people and raise awareness on how to fight this <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2a3f6df-5f6b-49a1-9ffe-116d236599fd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> with screening and early detection, by quitting smoking and through healthy eating. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"4\">How to Detect <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8ccc6d47-aa93-42db-8ce2-50e9a3cc900c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span>?<\/strong> There are several types of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3dd1dc94-8aa5-4a74-a6e2-7c139dfcdfec\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancers<\/span> and accordingly, the symptoms also vary based on the location of the disease. However, some of the key symptoms that could indicate <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a58e82d3-7afe-422e-879d-37935ba90d98\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> include;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent coughing or difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained or unintentional weight loss over a short period of time<\/li>\n<li>Extreme fatigue and severe lack of energy which will also be accompanied by other symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Feeling less hungry for a prolonged period of time<\/li>\n<li>Persistent <span id=\"urn:enhancement-381be9fc-8d9a-4e98-970f-6564e95890b2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/heartburn\">heartburn<\/span> or indigestion<\/li>\n<li>A sore wound or mouth ulcer that won\u2019t heal<\/li>\n<li>Very heavy, drenching night sweats<\/li>\n<li>Problems with urinating such as being unable to go, urinating more frequently or pain with urination<\/li>\n<li>Changes to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-15564017-62a7-433c-ab52-e5705d60fd34\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/bowel-movements\">bowel movements<\/span> such as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-711c3af2-d7e0-4e39-b1e4-10cdf640d58b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/constipation\">constipation<\/span>, diarrhea or the presence of blood in the stool<\/li>\n<li>Unusual painless lumps that increase in size<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Not all Tissue Changes are <span id=\"urn:enhancement-49c400ba-2a9b-441e-b5b8-bcb6fbdbfdbd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">Cancer<\/span><\/strong> Not all types of changes in the tissue are considered <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3c99c4ce-251d-4e36-a313-b825bc8fffc8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> although certain types of changes can develop into <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a585cf6b-cd9e-4c7e-b1e2-fb3c8a4bb945\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> if not promptly treated. Examples of tissues changes not considered <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fcb2f651-d6b2-480b-a6ea-8abd11c75eb3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> but are monitored include;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em><span id=\"urn:enhancement-8ddafd2c-2dff-4339-864a-0247a8cd4fcf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hyperplasia\">Hyperplasia<\/span><\/em><\/strong>: This occurs when cells divide faster than normal and extra cells proliferate. It can occur because of a number of reasons such as chronic irritation and the cells look normal under a microscope.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Dysplasia<\/em><\/strong>: This is a more serious condition where the cells look abnormal and with evidence of changes in how the tissue is organized with a greater chance of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-94b2d28c-2595-452b-8669-c6b344e67b0e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> developing. Certain types of dysplasia need to be monitored for changes or treatment may be required. For example, one of the more serious condition is known as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-809ab8f3-96a8-4f06-8b4d-0ead2ffee0c8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/carcinoma-in-situ\">carcinoma in situ<\/span> which is generally not considered <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eb6725b8-72f6-4f39-98d1-8a6e1f718f8d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> as the abnormal cells cannot spread beyond the site of origination, however, as it has the potential to become <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5d70c6b4-c6fc-4738-a251-37757a83b289\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>, it is usually treated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"5\">What are effective <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3df10af3-017a-4f51-acf4-60c0f4a313a0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> screening tests?<\/strong> The goal of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bbd847d3-bd28-4a8d-a171-af62dc8d2366\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> screening tests is to detect <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e43040d7-bf45-448e-a54e-67af7cf30d80\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> early even before it causes any symptoms, so it may be easier to successfully treat. Some of the effective screening tests include;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"urn:enhancement-c657a908-6f18-462a-ae83-e7d58c62de42\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/colonoscopy\">Colonoscopy<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1add2177-617c-4689-b082-342166a2cc22\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/sigmoidoscopy\">sigmoidoscopy<\/span> and stool tests: This not only identifies colorectal <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9ad56e53-9adf-4414-8106-e675ecbfb56d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span> early but can also help in the prevention of the disease in the first place by detecting the colon growths (polyps) and removing them even before it turns into <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0190647a-f935-4eb5-bda8-dc7a3c63e597\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>. It is recommended that high-risk individuals at ages 50 through 75 should have the screening.<\/li>\n<li>Mammography: This can help reduce the deaths among women aged 40 to 74, particularly those over the age of 50.<\/li>\n<li><span id=\"urn:enhancement-02f34803-413a-43e6-a1fc-1d2b2adc0f07\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pap-test\">PAP test<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bd0e7d7a-e9ad-4dc4-b8b9-cca802403192\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hpv\">Human Papillomavirus<\/span> (HPV) testing: Both these tests can be done either alone or in a combination for the early detection of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-838fb68d-7be5-4fcc-b049-d7c60afd0f58\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/cervical-cancer\">cervical cancer<\/span> by identifying the abnormal cells even before it becomes <span id=\"urn:enhancement-33637e6e-478a-4797-be4f-45ae9034c5bc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/invasive\">cancer<\/span>.
