For instance, a woman has a higher risk of getting the infection with vaginal sex, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-729c785a-3e81-4413-a31a-c38cc16c4469\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/sexually-transmitted-diseases\">sexually transmitted diseases<\/span> are more serious or harder to treat among women with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-34677c6b-351e-4d34-8201-d2438ec0e4a4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span> and also they can potentially pass the infection to their infants during pregnancies and breastfeeding. And, since the start of it as a global <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a9fcfd65-c79d-4ae8-81cf-5becae5dfd8c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span> epidemic, women have been disproportionately affected by it more than the male population. There are nearly 1 million individuals in the United States alone diagnosed with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f79424b5-a93f-466d-a446-094a7abe2fca\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span>. According to an estimate by the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d6769349-7506-429f-9e50-26a4199f9eff\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span> (CDC), by the end of 2015, 23% of all cases with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bf46e7fc-466c-4f2e-be47-5d480c7c8581\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span> in the United States are women and around 12% of them are not even aware they have <span id=\"urn:enhancement-843edcc4-4319-433f-91d5-d78672dd3b64\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span>. Of all the women diagnosed with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6bd3df9b-b469-4ddb-afdd-286694d9b9a8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span>, 61% of them were African American, 19% were white, 16% were Hispanic\/Latina and 5% were other. March 10 is the National Women and Girls <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b5b75d18-5c0a-4c03-b6de-d35db699997e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span>\/AIDS Awareness Day with the goal to raise awareness on how women can protect themselves from <span id=\"urn:enhancement-baa709d1-41db-4f0c-ba28-495ad7c45ce1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span>. AIDS stands for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1a80a58d-3945-44de-bdf7-342529096d04\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/acquired-immune-deficiency-syndrome\">acquired immune deficiency syndrome<\/span> which is the advanced stage of the disease when the immune system of the individual is damaged. As a result, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c5e18c06-f98e-42a1-b8aa-a4a04645a019\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/immune-cells\">immune cells<\/span> are only few in numbers meaning the body cannot effectively fight off infections and certain types of cancer. Individuals infected with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3b14dc7d-ae51-4625-aff2-0b362040aca3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span> will usually experience some \u2018flu\u2019 like symptoms which could include severe fatigue, muscle aches, night sweats, swollen glands and sore throat. The primary <span id=\"urn:enhancement-53ed1797-8f8c-45bc-a723-7d5a40343944\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span> infection can last from just a few days to weeks.
