Should we be expecting another pandemic within our lifetimes?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we are going to answer all of the questions by looking back through the history of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b6cc3181-e4b0-4d0c-b178-ce0748e03d3d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span>, studying how deadly they were, how they ended, and where those diseases are today. We will also be exploring the concept of &#8216;Pandemic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-41338600-18db-4ea5-b8bb-089554c74109\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">Influenza<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can learn a lot about <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b41185fb-490a-4460-84b7-9edbc8761fae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> from looking at their histories. Since 2002 there have been 5 major <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6fea3454-6034-4d4e-89af-cd79987fc730\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to have a pandemic that only affects one nation or continent. An example of this is the 2014 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2213fbdd-b5a0-4a67-a18b-ab3a9f46bad5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ebola\">Ebola<\/span> epidemic that affected vast areas of Africa but had little to no effect in Europe and America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Many Pandemics Were There In History\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do not have records of the whole of history (sadly), so there is no way to know officially how many <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e2551b0c-b275-4118-bb3d-d9f95c8d7a9e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> there have ever been.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we have pretty extensive records of life in the Common Era (CE, formally AD), so we have a fairly good understanding of everything that has happened during that time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Common Era we have a record of 20 disease outbreaks that meet the pandemic criteria. 5 of which have happened in the last 20 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will be going through each of these <span id=\"urn:enhancement-35ff2d29-c7c9-443a-b540-585cc3817110\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> later in this article.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth noting that our records of the earlier <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dc376d07-8b9f-42a6-baba-3ed564128607\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> will not be as accurate as of the newer ones. There are many reasons for this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, an accurate diagnosis was near impossible until about 70 years ago. Until then, there was no cocreate way to prove what somebody had died from. There may have been many people who died without being diagnosed or people who happened to die during a pandemic but not because of it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, there were no accurate population counts for many thousands of years. We can only make guesses at population numbers and how many people were killed by these diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, communication was poor up until the early 20th century. In the dark ages, communicating between villages was difficult, let alone communication between continents. Studying the earlier <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9bcf0489-39ad-49d3-adf0-0c9228659e09\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> is like putting together a very tricky puzzle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference Between A Pandemic And An Epidemic<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout history, there have been thousands of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-37a3fda6-e559-45ea-af2b-9410423bc136\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/epidemics\">Epidemics<\/span>, but only 20 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d0ffd936-1dde-465e-9bf4-5609ba292e21\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span>? What is the difference between the two? And what makes a pandemic different?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be difficult for the average person to understand the differences between the two, as doctors and politicians will often misuse these worlds on purpose to make their points seem more valid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four ways to categories a disease outbreak:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-450e489d-d641-499c-8763-3f0a744eef1d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/endemic\">ENDEMIC<\/span> &#8211; an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cb50310b-1395-438f-b0e2-8a8091e42b04\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/endemic\">endemic<\/span> is a level of disease that is near constant in a country or area. An example of this is Malaria in Central Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OUTBREAK &#8211; an outbreak is an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f7dda151-5bce-41c4-a3e0-31e1bf249e8b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/endemic\">endemic<\/span> that has spread in higher numbers or a new location when it wasn&#8217;t expected to. An example of this is the recent outbreak of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-395df962-7602-4f97-998b-27defb2b7eb6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/dengue\">Dengue<\/span> fever in Hawaii.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPIDEMIC &#8211; an epidemic is an outbreak that develops to affect a serious percentage of a specific population (a town, a city, a continent). Most countries have a yearly Flu epidemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PANDEMIC &#8211; a pandemic is an epidemic that has traveled to somewhere it was not expected to. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2c12818-e905-4440-8ba0-fc30c38e9a10\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">Pandemics<\/span> are cross border problems, and with the development in intercontinental travel, they have become global issues. Based on the surviving records of the physician <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this was believed to be a disease that was relaxed to Small Pox or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b3561d27-4c8c-4b55-a874-0b98121d86c5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/measles\">Measles<\/span>. It was believed to have wiped out over 5-10 million Romans, Gauls, and Germans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pandemic was believed to have been brought into the Roman Empire with troops that were returning from Egypt or Turkey (the Near East). The first records we have of it come from Galen, who described witnessing the disease while sacking the Mesopotamian city of Seleucia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Romans then spread this disease along the shores of the Rhine (Germany) and into the Gaul territories (now France). The disease destroyed many villages and nearly wiped out the Roman army. It was even believed to have killed an Emperor &#8211; Lucius Verus the co-regent of Marcus Aurelius, in 169.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plague of Justinian (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">541 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Plague of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-721185a1-7403-4781-882b-1cc525124a87\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/justinian\">Justinian<\/span> was caused by the bacteria <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yersinia_pestis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yersinia Pestis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was the second of the Old World <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bdc13c18-39ee-483f-8415-ec1c11e99995\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">Pandemics<\/span> that we have records of. This stand of the plague is often referred to as The First Plague by historians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Plague of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-25c95329-91c2-4529-916b-b617be6c9c14\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/justinian\">Justinian<\/span> was the first and largest outbreak of The First Plague. It was named after the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1edcbaaa-e3e9-46b0-987e-f9ec5b3f7ed0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/byzantine-emperor\">Byzantine emperor<\/span> in Constantinople, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dcfa9715-dd24-49d2-b9b9-4b1db8b5ffb6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/justinian\">Justinian<\/span> I &#8211; who caught and recovered from the plague according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procopius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Procopius<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the court historian at the time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkey, Egypt, most of mainland Europe, and the Mediterranean Basin were affected by this pandemic. And it is thought to be one of the deadliest <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b8a6b2d0-727c-41ab-b0c0-859f802f4648\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> of all time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese Smallpox Epidemic\u00a0 (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">735 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/735%E2%80%93737_Japanese_smallpox_epidemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was short lived but incredibly deadly. The outbreak lasted for just two years, but in this time it was believed to have killed a third of the people living in Japan at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was believed that a group of fishermen contracted this strain of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-407325ca-1ad9-45dc-886f-5950b68d8be4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/smallpox\">Smallpox<\/span> in Korea before bringing it back to the island nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease killed peasants and nobles alike, with many of the most powerful families losing entire generations to the disease. So many farmers were killed by this outbreak that rice farming was affected for two decades afterward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Death (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1347 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Black Death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bubonic_plague\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bubonic Plague <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outbreak that was the deadliest pandemic of all time. It is possible that this disease killed over 200 million people. The Bubonic Plague is also referred to as The Second Plague by historians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entirety of Europe as well as Northern and Central Africa was affected by this plague. The outbreak began in Central Africa but was first recorded in Crimea. Fleas infected with the disease then travel throughout Europe on the back of rats causing havoc wherever they went.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bubonic Plague is also caused by <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b2a4e90e-8f4f-427e-a563-afca6b068c3d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/yersinia-pestis\">Yersinia pestis<\/span> but is not directly related to The First Plague.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smallpox (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1520 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1520 CE the Spanish landed in South America and introduced <span id=\"urn:enhancement-50b59615-2633-4604-940f-24173ae4036d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/smallpox\">Smallpox<\/span> into the indigenous population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pandemic aided the Spanish&#8217;s conquest of the region, as the population had never been exposed to it before. This was the hardest time England was hit by the Bubonic plague during its entire history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outbreak was so bad that the King and his Royal court were moved out of the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another disaster brought an end to the Plague in 1666. It is believed that enough of the rats and fleas in the city were killed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/HistoryUK\/HistoryofEngland\/The-Great-Fire-of-London\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Fire of London <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to put a stop to the outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholera Pandemics (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1817 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1817%E2%80%931824_cholera_pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> originated in a small village outside of Calcutta before spreading across India, Asia, East Africa, and as far north as the Mediterranean. It was one of the first <span id=\"urn:enhancement-45e05be7-a0e2-4590-b36f-23bbf54546ff\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> to affect nearly every country in Asia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual death rate of this pandemic is unknown as records at the time were poor. India reported nearly 9 million deaths across the whole of the pandemic, but many believe this to be over exaggerated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do know that one of the worst affected places was the island of Java who lost over 100,000 people to the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Plague (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1885 CE)<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this pandemic started in 1885, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/resources\/publications\/surveillance\/plague.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not consider this pandemic to have finished until the 1960s. This was the third major outbreak of a Bubonic plague strain (the first being the Plague of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a07b1496-f7bc-48ea-9006-990a418d4ed2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/justinian\">Justinian<\/span>, and the second being <span id=\"urn:enhancement-956e6c3c-e3e6-468f-83ef-f7d20d8bdddb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/the-black-death\">the Black Death<\/span>). Many of the following <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6a50d941-c147-4bed-82a8-6c1df72a461c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/pandemics\">pandemics<\/span> we are going to cover were further outbreaks of the Third Plague.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Third Plague began in China and killed over 2 million people in that country alone. This outbreak was mostly contained in Asia but eventually spread to every inhabited continent in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow Fever (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">late 1800s CE)<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the late 18th century and early 19th century, America and the Caribbean were hit by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_yellow_fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow Fever pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease is believed to have originated in Central Africa, but it caused devastation when it arrived in America via the Caribbean.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia was the first city to get hit by the disease, and over 7 years around 20% of its population (10,000 people) were killed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease also spread to Haiti, Georgia, Bermuda, New Orleans, Virginia, Texas, and the Panama Canal.\u00a0 Due to a lack of records, it is hard to get an idea of the total death rates of this disease in the Americas, but it could be over 1 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russian Flu (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1889 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5155 aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Russian-Flu.jpg\" alt=\"A pandemic in Russia cause by a flu \" width=\"1000\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Russian-Flu.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Russian-Flu-980x393.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Russian-Flu-480x192.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1889%E2%80%931890_pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Russian Flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the second major wave of the Third Plague. It was first reported within the Russian Empire. However, the Trans-Capsian railroad caused the plague by over 3200km in less than six months. The Russian Flu had reached America by late 1889. And it reached Mexico 2 months later. It was one of the first truly global <span id=\"urn:enhancement-462861dd-6b95-4230-8f14-1aa22ac47c6f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/epidemics\">epidemics<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russian Flu was believed to kill over 1 million people worldwide. With the majority of the deaths taking place in Russia and Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish Flu &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1918 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/1918-pandemic-h1n1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spanish Flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was caused by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H1N1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenza A virus subtype H1N1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Despite its name, the Spanish Flu was first documented in the United States. However, false newspaper reports made it out that Spain had been badly hit by the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-be89c0b7-5d41-4be1-aed6-27a732db46a0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span>, and it developed the name Spanish Flu.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease spread from America to Europe as the American army entered World War 1. The continent was already buckling under the pressure of the war and therefore conditions for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a91f1b9f-495b-4177-bcf0-ecf759fb7196\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span> to spread were perfect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some historians believe that the high death rates caused by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ww1centenary.oucs.ox.ac.uk\/body-and-mind\/the-spanish-influenza-pandemic-and-its-relation-to-the-first-world-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the virus lead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a peace treaty being drawn up and the war ending sooner than expected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian Flu &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1957 CE)<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/1957-1958-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian Flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was caused by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H2N2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenza A virus subtype H2N2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the year that it was active <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6fdaa4ce-030b-4c36-a5f2-4feb35ef4a7a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/asian-flu\">Asian Flu<\/span> was believed to have killed between 1-4 million people around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic slowly spread across Asia, hitting India particularly hard, before reaching the UK and the USA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An American biologist called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Hilleman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maurice Hilleman <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed a vaccine for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-03a9fbd9-2471-43b5-868e-75e085953f93\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span> that is thought to have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Without the vaccine death rates in the US were predicted to top 1 million.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hong Kong Flu &#8211;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1968 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pandemic-resources\/1968-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hong Kong Flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a second wave of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-269a10ff-abd0-4d86-a256-59627c142b17\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/asian-flu\">Asian Flu<\/span> that reared its head in Hong Kong in the late 1960s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within 6 weeks, 15% of Hong Kong&#8217;s population became infected with this flu &#8211; that was 500,000 in infections in a month and a half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later the flu spread across Europe with a much higher death rate. It killed 774 people in total.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_medical_professionals_who_died_during_the_SARS_outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41 of the SARS fatalities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were healthcare professionals who treated patients for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e0e53598-7897-4419-a50c-94446706edf6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span> &#8211; including 2 nurses and a doctor from Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SARS makes the pandemic not because of how many people it killed, but because of how far it spread.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SARS has also been given this elevated rating because of its relationship to the COVID-19 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-33f65722-abac-490f-9667-978e2d8728bd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span> (which is also known as SARS-COV-2). The flu got its name because it first emerged in Mexican Pig farms before appearing in humans in the US, it was also unofficially referred to as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3eb04fb9-084c-4aae-8213-81c07d0bd675\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/mexican-flu\">Mexican Flu<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The death toll of Swine flu is estimated to between 19,000 and 248,000 &#8211; with 18,449 lab confirmed deaths being officially reported.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebola\u00a0 &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ea0c84a7-eb2c-470e-ae98-b396d2ae165b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ebola\">Ebola<\/span> pandemic occurred in West Africa and mainly affected the nations of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. It was the biggest outbreak of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-298cdda3-3d8f-427a-9535-a1df360c6763\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ebola\">Ebola<\/span> the world has ever seen. The pandemic lasted for 3 years before being contained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cases of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f5d4481e-6007-4ef7-a2e2-a64a3063c5c1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/ebola\">Ebola<\/span> were also reported in Nigeria and Mali. Health workers returning to the United Kingdom and Spain also caught the disease. The UK was the only country outside of Africa to see a death during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0During that time over 10,000 people were killed by the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MERS &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 CE)\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MERS has been <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fab52c7b-bdb2-4b6c-b6a3-55247f3a5915\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/endemic\">endemic<\/span> in the Middle East since its discovery in 2012. Cases were first reported in Wuhan in late 2019. Florence&#8217;s tax records show that 80% of their population was killed in 4 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A large part of Europe&#8217;s community of monks and nuns died during the pandemic as they traveled around treating the sick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smallpox<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">56 million deaths<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mummies that showed evidence of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cc5a840e-b689-484b-bb64-62190abb7bbf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/smallpox\">Smallpox<\/span> contraction over 3000 years ago have been found in Egypt. This disease caused many <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b43bec2a-1330-47b4-b762-eb815aae1601\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/epidemics\">epidemics<\/span> across the planet until it was eradicated in 1979.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number above refers to the number of natives that are believed to have been killed by <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1784f43a-b578-4044-8e4f-bb7888bc2915\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/smallpox\">Smallpox<\/span> in the Americas. We may never know as the world was war torn as the disease broke out and record keeping was lax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most dangerous thing about the Spanish Flu was that it didn&#8217;t just kill the young and the old like other <span id=\"urn:enhancement-387f83d7-7a65-4b2e-b977-d36ff2b065dc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/influenza\">influenza<\/span>, but it was also killing a lot of young adults. These young adults would have been unaffected by other strains of flu. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/30114117\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">92%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the people who were killed by the Spanish Flu were under 65.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An unusual fact about the Spanish Flu was that it killed far more men than women, and men were more likely to die if they caught it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plague of Justinian<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 million deaths<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the first outbreak of The First Plague, a disease that is believed to have killed up to 100 million people (around 60% of Europe&#8217;s population at the time) over the 250 years it was active.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Records at the time suggested that the Plague of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9b78a319-9297-4fe5-845d-211ccefafe90\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-person\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/justinian\">Justinian<\/span> was killing 10,000 people a day at its peak &#8211; although there is no way of verifying these numbers. However, most cases can now be found in Africa and South America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite still killing over 600,000+ people a year there is still no cure or vaccine for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-89da18d8-aeda-4fd6-b4a0-bf824c6de819\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hiv\">HIV<\/span>\/AIDS. One of the key ways to prevent the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9a3438b5-b6db-492c-94b7-2d043c6e2d57\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span> from spreading is to use protection during sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are many places in the world where the needed types of contraception are hard and\/or to acquire. Many of the world&#8217;s major religions also preach against the use of contraception like condoms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Third Plague<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 million deaths<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first two major outbreaks of the Third Plague were believed to have killed 12 million people. 2 million people in China, and 10 million people in India. Some experts suggest that these numbers were actually closer to 15 million people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic began in Yunnan, China in 1885 and spread across China and the Indian subcontinent. Like the previous two plagues, it is believed to be spread by infected fleas traveling on rats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This plague was killing 100s of people a year up until the mid 1960s. Some areas in China are still considered health risks for new plague outbreaks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antonine Plague<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 million deaths<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservative estimates put the death rates of the Antonine Plague at 5 million deaths. But some historians believe this could be as high as 10 million. The disease spread across most of the Roman empire, as well as spreading into Germany and Gaul territories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Plague lasted for over 15 years, and in that time it nearly wiped out the whole of the Roman army. The Plague was estimated to have killed at least a third of the Roman Empire. One report from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cassius_Dio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cassius Dio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that the plague killed 20,000 people in Rome in just one day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.9 million deaths (as of 28\/06\/2021)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note &#8211; this pandemic is still going on at the time of writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have currently been 3.93 million recorded COVID-19 deaths. The UK, USA, and India being some of the hardest hit nations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">182 million cases have been recorded across the world. There have been two waves of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bc226a41-2fc2-4d16-bfb4-cba91782cbb2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span>, with a third one believed to be approaching. 4 new COVID-19 variants have been recorded (as of writing).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccinations against the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ab0e33da-6b38-4eb3-bec1-76d7d93bb498\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/virus\">virus<\/span> began in the UK in December 2020.
