In absolute count, the deaths were tallied 52,404. The abuse of prescription <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7351469f-56e2-40a5-9fd9-b12db69227ee\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/painkillers\">painkillers<\/span> and heroin are observed as the causative agents as per <span id=\"urn:enhancement-0bb0abae-1529-448d-a088-628704bdad8b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-organization\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention\">CDC<\/span> statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly nine thousand six hundred lives were lost due to the usage of synthetic opioids, including illicit <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b5821eda-85f1-464a-b88f-2e6f7810fe58\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/fentanyl\">fentanyl<\/span>. Drugs such as <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c652d17f-2b41-4095-bcb5-571cbcc07101\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/oxycontin\">Oxycontin<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-470b0cb7-2f9f-4b84-8be6-c00419aaac84\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/hydrocodone\/paracetamol\">Vicodin<\/span> accounted for 17500+ deaths in the year under purview.<\/p>\n<p>Astonishingly, deaths caused by overdosing of drugs now outnumber deaths related to car crashes and gun violence which are approximately 38K and 36K in the United States respectively. The rise in death toll due to drug overdoses in combination with deaths due to heart-related ailments brought down the life expectancy of people living in the US, for the first time in 2015 in more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>In the period between 2010 and 2015, nearly 300K Americans have lost their lives to drug overdoses.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Robert Glatter says the number of cases difficult to resuscitate has increased exponentially. Most physicians concur and suspect synthetic <span id=\"urn:enhancement-297442ed-4612-485e-b78c-4d9aea1de768\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/opiates\">opiates<\/span> as the causative agent.<\/p>\n<p>According to Emily Feinstein, director of health law and policy for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dbf57f9b-3c55-4183-80fc-90cfe09b5603\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/national-center-on-addiction-and-substance-abuse\">National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b8fc05d3-50c2-4ba9-8383-262cb9952af6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/fentanyl\">fentanyl<\/span>, a synthetic opioid manufactured in China, is now widely available within the country. Not only the drug is powerful, it is also sold at a cheaper price than heroin.
