He was the first MLB player to have his uniform number retired after his farewell speech. After two years, Lou Gehrig died in his sleep in his New York home on June 2, 1941, due to the fatal disease. However, one should understand the nature and type of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f6685747-ba99-4ac3-bcdf-a7fcc3745897\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/neurodegeneration\">neurodegenerative disease<\/span> are the determinants of the patients\u2019 lifespan. The complexity lies in the variability of the disorder but only a small fraction of people diagnosed with this form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/dementia\/\">dementia<\/a> live a long life.<\/p>\n<p>The disorder affects the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4f4f67f2-334e-4a21-9963-39fa7f2e875f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/upper-motor-neurons\">upper motor neurons<\/span> (brain) or the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-08f14ac7-fcde-4c2b-8a65-2120e23ee5ef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/lower-motor-neurons\">lower motor neurons<\/span> (Spine) and in some cases both. It is important to understand each muscle in the body is controlled by motor neurons that reside in the frontal regions of the brain. Medically, all neurodegenerative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/diseases\">diseases<\/a> including <span id=\"urn:enhancement-610f622e-4a1d-4300-9826-6953de0281d2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/alzheimers\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c4140560-07fe-49bf-bafd-4278dee2294a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/parkinsons\">Parkinson\u2019s<\/span> share important <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d0c3e48b-654d-423a-a87a-eef56d4b1bd4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/traits\">traits<\/span> such as spreading of toxic proteins from one neuron to another, inflammation of neurons, the decrease in the recycling of misfolded proteins and increase in the amount of protein misfolding.<\/p>\n<p>Pathologically, evidence of deteriorating <span id=\"urn:enhancement-37be1db7-1499-40ad-9be0-ee3f438a9bbe\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/upper-motor-neurons\">upper motor neurons<\/span> has been found in autopsy procedures despite scientific community often seeing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-30f4bb6c-ad3f-4bca-9cd0-65f8037e1425\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/progressive-muscular-atrophy\">progressive muscular atrophy<\/span> (a form of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-901894f0-26b2-43c0-b73c-0064cbd7eee3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/als\">ALS<\/span>) as isolated illness of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-36eed6aa-2c42-4ffd-ad89-b8864556095d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/lower-motor-neurons\">lower motor neurons<\/span>. Resources need to be poured and the definitions need to be recreated if problems have to be addressed.<\/p>\n<p>As such there is no treatment for the disorder but the quality of life could be improved with proper medication for memory loss, treatment for behavioral changes and change in sleep patterns. The disorder is quite fatal when the motor neurons running the diaphragm degenerates often resulting in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ee169ccb-7990-4e9e-a9c0-deca745ed73c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"https:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl1503301\/entity\/respiratory-failure\">respiratory failure<\/span>. Also, deterioration of swallowing muscles leads to malnutrition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybiosource.com\/learn\/dehydration\/\">dehydration<\/a>. Other than these cases, patients could live longer but the condition is expected to get worse over time as toxic proteins pass from one neuron to another.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the absence of a cure, the disorder cannot be reversed but largely medical research is focused on slowing the progression of symptoms and complications. The survival and quality of life largely depend on the quality of assistance provided as in the case of Stephen Hawking. Medicines used in the treatment of muscle cramps, constipation, fatigue, pain, depression and sleep problems are used to suppress symptoms throughout patient\u2019s life from time to time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Table of Contents 1.
