NKX2-5 encoded by homeobox-containing genes that implicated in commitment to and/or differentiation of the myocardial lineage, and acts as a transcriptional activator of ANF in cooperation with GATA4. During embryonic development, NKX2-5 plays pivotal roles in specifying cardiac progenitors, cardiac morphogenesis, cardiomyocyte differentiation and conduction system development.
