NCBI Summary for CDH11
This gene encodes a type II classical cadherin from the cadherin superfamily, integral membrane proteins that mediate calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. Mature cadherin proteins are composed of a large N-terminal extracellular domain, a single membrane-spanning domain, and a small, highly conserved C-terminal cytoplasmic domain. Type II (atypical) cadherins are defined based on their lack of a HAV cell adhesion recognition sequence specific to type I cadherins. Expression of this particular cadherin in osteoblastic cell lines, and its upregulation during differentiation, suggests a specific function in bone development and maintenance. [provided by RefSeq]
UniProt Comments for CDH11
CDH11: Cadherins are calcium dependent cell adhesion proteins. They preferentially interact with themselves in a homophilic manner in connecting cells; cadherins may thus contribute to the sorting of heterogeneous cell types. Interacts with PCDH8. Expressed mainly in brain but also found in other tissues. Expressed in neuroblasts. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Cell adhesion
Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 16q21
Cellular Component: cytoplasm; integral to membrane; plasma membrane
Molecular Function: calcium ion binding
Biological Process: intercellular junction assembly and maintenance; ossification; corticospinal tract morphogenesis; cell adhesion; homophilic cell adhesion; skeletal development
