NCBI Summary for CEP72
The product of this gene is a member of the leucine-rich-repeat (LRR) superfamily of proteins. The protein is localized to the centrosome, a non-membraneous organelle that functions as the major microtubule-organizing center in animal cells. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
UniProt Comments for CEP72
CEP72: Involved in the recruitment of key centrosomal proteins to the centrosome. Provides centrosomal microtubule-nucleation activity on the gamma-tubulin ring complexes (gamma-TuRCs) and has critical roles in forming a focused bipolar spindle, which is needed for proper tension generation between sister chromatids. Required for localization of KIZ/PLK1S1, AKAP9 and gamma-tubulin ring complexes (gamma-TuRCs). Belongs to the CEP72 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
Protein type: Microtubule-binding
Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 5p15.33
Cellular Component: centrosome; cytosol
Molecular Function: protein binding
Biological Process: centriole replication; G2/M transition of mitotic cell cycle; gamma-tubulin complex localization; spindle organization and biogenesis
