 Searchable Terms for VIM purchase    Vimentin (or Vim) is a type III intermediate filament (IF) protein that makes up the bulk of the cytoskeleton in mesenchymal cells. The quaternary structure of vimentin is a coiled-coil dimer of two identical monomers. The functions of vimentin include supporting and anchoring various organelles within the cytoplasm, (nucleus, mitochondria, and the endoplasmic reticulum), preserving the cell shape and integrity of the cytoplasm, and stabilizing the interaction of other cytoskeletal components. Additionally, vimentin controls the transportation of LDL-derived cholesterol from lysosomes to its esterification site.
Vimentin has recently been found to be overexpressed in several epithelial cancers such as breast, lunch, prostate, and malignant melanomas. This correlates with increased tumor growth, metastasis, and poor prognosis. These factors make vimentin a potential target for cancer treatments.
During mitosis, vimentin is phosphorylated at Ser56 by cyclin dependent kinase 1 (cdk1). This phosphorylation provides a binding site for Polo-like kinase (PLK), a mediator of the G2/M cell cycle transition.
This rabbit IgG polyclonal anti vimentin (phosphor-Ser56) antibody only recognizes the human vimentin when phosphorylated at serine 56. It is suitable for western blot, immunohistochemistry of fixed tissue, and ELISA applications.

 NCBI Summary for VIM    This gene encodes a member of the intermediate filament family. Intermediate filamentents, along with microtubules and actin microfilaments, make up the cytoskeleton. The protein encoded by this gene is responsible for maintaining cell shape, integrity of the cytoplasm, and stabilizing cytoskeletal interactions. It is also involved in the immune response, and controls the transport of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-derived cholesterol from a lysosome to the site of esterification.
