NCBI Summary for APOC1    This gene encodes a member of the apolipoprotein C1 family. This gene is expressed primarily in the liver, and it is activated when monocytes differentiate into macrophages. The encoded protein plays a central role in high density lipoprotein (HDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) metabolism. This protein has also been shown to inhibit cholesteryl ester transfer protein in plasma. A pseudogene of this gene is located 4 kb downstream in the same orientation, on the same chromosome. This gene is mapped to chromosome 19, where it resides within a apolipoprotein gene cluster. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2016]

UniProt Comments for APOC1    APOC1: Appears to modulate the interaction of APOE with beta- migrating VLDL and inhibit binding of beta-VLDL to the LDL receptor-related protein. Binds free fatty acids and reduces their intracellular esterification. Belongs to the apolipoprotein C1 family.

Protein type: Inhibitor; Lipid-binding; Secreted, signal peptide; Endoplasmic reticulum; Secreted

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 19q13.2

Cellular Component: chylomicron; endoplasmic reticulum

Molecular Function: fatty acid binding; lipase inhibitor activity; phosphatidylcholine binding; phospholipase inhibitor activity

Biological Process: cholesterol efflux; cholesterol metabolic process; lipid metabolic process; lipoprotein metabolic process; negative regulation of cholesterol transport; negative regulation of fatty acid biosynthetic process; negative regulation of lipid catabolic process; negative regulation of lipid metabolic process; negative regulation of lipoprotein lipase activity; negative regulation of receptor-mediated endocytosis; phospholipid efflux; positive regulation of catalytic activity; regulation of cholesterol transport; triacylglycerol metabolic process

Research Articles on APOC1    1. The ability of apoC1 to inhibit CETP activity is impaired in patients with diabetes. Glycation of apoC1 leads to a change in its electrostatic properties that might account, at least in part, for a loss of constitutive CETP inhibition and an increase in plasma CETP activity in patients with diabetes.
