UniProt Comments for UGT2A1
UGT2A1/2: UDP-glucuronosyltransferases catalyze phase II biotransformation reactions in which lipophilic substrates are conjugated with glucuronic acid to increase water solubility and enhance excretion. They are of major importance in the conjugation and subsequent elimination of potentially toxic xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. Active on odorants and seems to be involved in olfaction; it could help clear lipophilic odorant molecules from the sensory epithelium. Belongs to the UDP-glycosyltransferase family. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
Protein type: Xenobiotic Metabolism - drug metabolism - other enzymes; Xenobiotic Metabolism - metabolism by cytochrome P450; Carbohydrate Metabolism - starch and sucrose; Carbohydrate Metabolism - ascorbate and aldarate; Lipid Metabolism - androgen and estrogen; Transferase; Xenobiotic Metabolism - drug metabolism - cytochrome P450; EC 2.4.1.17; Cofactor and Vitamin Metabolism - porphyrin and chlorophyll; Membrane protein, integral; Cofactor and Vitamin Metabolism - retinol; Carbohydrate Metabolism - pentose and glucuronate interconversions
