NCBI Summary for Pfn1
regulates actin polymerization; may reorganize the actin cytoskeleton; may be involved in the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis [RGD, Feb 2006]
UniProt Comments for Pfn1
profilin 1: a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein belonging to the profilin family. At high concentrations, profilin 1 prevents the polymerization of actin, whereas it enhances it at low concentrations. By binding to PIP2, it inhibits the formation of IP3 and DG. Deletion of this gene is associated with Miller-Dieker syndrome.
Protein type: Cytoskeletal; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Actin-binding
Cellular Component: cell cortex; cytoplasm; cytoskeleton; focal adhesion; membrane; neuron projection; nucleus; synapse
Molecular Function: actin binding; actin monomer binding; adenyl-nucleotide exchange factor activity; phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate binding; protein binding; receptor binding; Rho GTPase binding
Biological Process: actin polymerization and/or depolymerization; negative regulation of actin filament bundle formation; negative regulation of actin filament polymerization; negative regulation of stress fiber formation; neural tube closure; positive regulation of actin filament polymerization; positive regulation of ATPase activity; positive regulation of DNA metabolic process; positive regulation of stress fiber formation; positive regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter; positive regulation of viral transcription; protein stabilization; regulation of actin filament polymerization; regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter; response to organic substance
