Related Product Information for Adam12 recombinant protein

This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) protein family. Members of this family are membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins, and have been implicated in a variety of biological processes involving cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development, and neurogenesis. This gene has two alternatively spliced transcripts: a shorter secreted form and a longer membrane-bound form. The shorter form is found to stimulate myogenesis.

NCBI Summary for Adam12    This gene encodes a member of a disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) family of endoproteases that play important roles in various biological processes including cell signaling, adhesion and migration. The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate a mature, functional protein that localizes to the cell surface. About a third of the mice lacking the encoded protein die before weaning. Overexpression of the encoded protein in a mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy alleviates the muscle pathology by preventing cell necrosis and inflammation. [provided by RefSeq, May 2016]

UniProt Comments for Adam12    Involved in skeletal muscle regeneration, specifically at the onset of cell fusion. Also involved in macrophage-derived giant cells (MGC) and osteoclast formation from mononuclear precursors.
