Related Product Information for KGF recombinant protein

Recombinant human KGF protein with molecular weight 18.9 kDa.
The Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF), also known as FGF7, is a growth factor present in the epithelialization-phase of wound healing. KGF was both acid and heat labile and consisted of a single polypeptide chain of approximately 28 kDa. Lack of mitogenic activity on either fibroblasts or endothelial cells indicated that KGF possessed a target cell specificity distinct from any previously characterized growth factor. Microsequencing revealed an amino-terminal sequence containing no significant homology to any known protein. The release of this growth factor by human embryonic fibroblasts raises the possibility that KGF may play a role in mesenchymal stimulation of normal epithelial cell proliferation. FGF7 and FGF22 promote the organization of excitatory and inhibitory presynaptic terminals, respectively, as target-derived presynaptic organizers. Terauchi et al. (2010) concluded that specific FGFs act as target-derived presynaptic organizers and help to organize specific presynaptic terminals in the mammalian brain.

NCBI Summary for KGF    The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. This protein is a potent epithelial cell-specific growth factor, whose mitogenic activity is predominantly exhibited in keratinocytes but not in fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Studies of mouse and rat homologs of this gene implicated roles in morphogenesis of epithelium, reepithelialization of wounds, hair development and early lung organogenesis. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

UniProt Comments for KGF    Function: Plays an important role in the regulation of embryonic development, cell proliferation and cell differentiation. Required for normal branching morphogenesis. Growth factor active on keratinocytes. Possible major paracrine effector of normal epithelial cell proliferation. Ref.4 Ref.6

Subunit structure: Interacts with FGFBP1. Interacts with FGFR2. Affinity between fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors is increased by heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans that function as coreceptors. Ref.4 Ref.5 Ref.6

Subcellular location: Secreted.

Tissue specificity: Epithelial cell.

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the heparin-binding growth factors family.
