RPT2a encodes the 26S proteasome subunit. It is required for root meristem maintenance, and regulates gametogenesis. RPT2a is also shown to regulate gene silencing via DNA methylation.

The 26S protease is involved in the ATP-dependent degradation of ubiquitinated proteins. The regulatory (or ATPase) complex confers ATP dependency and substrate specificity to the 26S complex. Is required for the maintenance of postembryonic root and shoot meristems. Has a specific role in the regulation of organs size.
