Zika Virus (ZIKV) - Laboratory Detection Overview
Elusive Zika Virus Linked to Microcephaly - Zika virus (ZIKV) is spread by mosquitos. Although symptoms are usually mild, there is increasing evidence ZIKV infection during pregnancy is associated with microcephaly in newborns. Potential links between ZIKV were brought to light in late 2015 following an alarming increase in reported cases of infants born in Brazil with microcephaly. However, causal factors between ZIKV and microcephaly remain to be fully elucidated and confirmed. Furthermore, scientists have few clues as to how ZIKV may cause microcephaly or other neurological birth defects which might also be associated with ZIKV infection.
Concern about ZIKV is spreading worldwide as reported cases of ZIKV infection increase. Researchers are working relentlessly to elucidate relationships between infection in pregnant women and abnormal brain development in their children. One of the challenges is symptoms may be so mild a pregnant woman might not necessarily remember being sick with the virus. In general people pregnant or not, may not realize they are or were previously infected with the virus. It's a growing concern that undiagnosed infections could unknowingly be spread worldwide to others through mosquito bites.
MyBioSource's ZIKV Real Time PCR (RT-PCR) and ZIKV Antibody ELISA Kits are being used by researchers worldwide to study ZIKV. The ZIKV virus RT-PCR Kit (catalog #MBS598109) detects ZIKV virus in serum and plasma. The ZIKV IgM ELISA Kit (catalog #MBS109003) and ZIKV IgG ELISA Kit (catalog #MBS109002) detect IgM and IgG antibodies, respectively, in serum or plasma. The presence of antibodies to ZIKV is an indication or presumption an individual was exposed to ZIKV and mounted an immune response. We also carry the Zika Virus ENV-NS1 (E. Coli) Recombinant (Catalog #MBS485200). ZIKV Envelope (Insect cells) Recombinant (Catalog #MBS319787), ZIKV NS1 (Insect cells) Recombinant (Catalog #MBS319788), Zika virus envelope (E. coli) Recombinant (Catalog #MBS596001), Zika full length NS1 (E. coli) Recombinant (Catalog #MBS596002) proteins in our catalog.
