NCBI Summary for glnB

GlnB is the archetypal PII protein; a ubiquitous family of small trimeric signal transduction proteins that facilitate regulation of bacterial nitrogen metabolism by controlling the activities of a variety of enzymes, transcription factors and membrane proteins. [More information is available at EcoGene: EG10384]. The protein PII plays a critical role in the regulation of nitrogen metabolism by controlling the level and activity of glutamine synthetase. [More information is available at EcoCyc: EG10384].

UniProt Comments for glnB

P-II indirectly controls the transcription of the glutamine synthetase gene (glnA). P-II prevents NR-II-catalyzed conversion of NR-I to NR-I-phosphate, the transcriptional activator of GlnA. When P-II is uridylylated to P-II-UMP, these events are reversed. When the ratio of Gln to 2-ketoglutarate decreases, P-II is uridylylated to P-II-UMP, which causes the deadenylation of glutamine synthetase by GlnE, so activating the enzyme.
