Product Overview

Online Datasheet in PDF
Product Name
Myostatin (MSTN), Active Protein
Full Product Name
Recombinant Human Myostatin
Product Gene Name
Product Synonym Names
Myostatin Human; Myostatin Human Recombinant; GDF-8; MSTN; Growth Differentiation Factor 8; MSTN Muscle Hypertrophy; Myostatin
Sequence
The sequence of the first five N-terminal amino acids was determined and was found to be Asp-Phe-Gl y-Leu-Asp
Host
E Coli
Form/Format
Lyophilized from a concentrated (1mg/ml) solution containing no additives.
Sterile Filtered White lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder.
Purity/Purification
Greater than 95.0% as determined by: (a) Analysis by RP-HPLC. (b) Analysis by SDS-PAGE.
Preparation and Storage
Lyophilized Myostatin although stable at room temperature for 3 weeks, should be stored desiccated below -18 degree C. Upon reconstitution Myostatin should be stored at 4 degree C between 2-7 days and for future use below -18 degree C.For long term storage it is recommended to add a carrier protein (0.1% HSA or BSA).Please prevent freeze-thaw cycles.
Molecular Weight
42,750 Da
OMIM
601788
3D Structure
ModBase 3D Structure for O14793
Active Protein Note
Protein activity can be an ambiguous term. Please refer to the data sheet or inquire with Technical Support to determine the definition of activity for this product.
Solubility
It is recommended to reconstitute the lyophilized Myostatin in sterile 20mM HCl at 0.1 mg/ml, which can then be further diluted to other aqueous solutions.
Protein Content
Protein quantitation was carried out by two independent methods:1. UV spectroscopy at 280 nm using the absorbency value of 1.55 as the extinction coefficient for a 0.1% (1mg/ml) solution. This value is calculated by the PC GENE computer analysis program of protein sequences (IntelliGenetics). 2. Analysis by RP-HPLC, using a standard solution of Myostatin as a Reference Standard.
Biological Activity
The ED50 as determined by the inhibition of the proliferation of MPC-11 cells is < 20ng/ml, corresponding to a Specific Activity of 50,000units/mg.

Other Notes

Small volumes of MSTN active protein vial(s) may occasionally become entrapped in the seal of the product vial during shipment and storage. If necessary, briefly centrifuge the vial on a tabletop centrifuge to dislodge any liquid in the container`s cap. Certain products may require to ship with dry ice and additional dry ice fee may apply.

NCBI Summary for MSTN

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family and the TGF-beta superfamily. This group of proteins is characterized by a polybasic proteolytic processing site which is cleaved to produce a mature protein containing seven conserved cysteine residues. The members of this family are regulators of cell growth and differentiation in both embryonic and adult tissues. This gene is thought to encode a secreted protein which negatively regulates skeletal muscle growth. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

UniProt Comments for MSTN

MSTN: Acts specifically as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. Defects in MSTN are the cause of muscle hypertrophy (MSLHP). MSLHP is a condition characterized by increased muscle bulk and strength. Affected individuals are exceptionally strong. Belongs to the TGF-beta family.
