NCBI Summary for CD55

This gene encodes an inhibitor of both the classical and the alternative pathways of complement activation. The encoded preproprotein undergoes post-translational processing to generate a mature polypeptide anchored to the plasma membrane via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol moiety. Erythrocytes from mice deficient in the encoded protein exhibit impaired regulation of complement activation resulting in enhanced complement deposition. Mice lacking the encoded protein exhibit enhanced susceptibility to experimentally induced myasthenia gravis. This gene is located adjacent to a closely related gene on chromosome 1. UniProt Comments for CD55

CD55: This protein recognizes C4b and C3b fragments that condense with cell-surface hydroxyl or amino groups when nascent C4b and C3b are locally generated during C4 and c3 activation. Interaction of daf with cell-associated C4b and C3b polypeptides interferes with their ability to catalyze the conversion of C2 and factor B to enzymatically active C2a and Bb and thereby prevents the formation of C4b2a and C3bBb, the amplification convertases of the complement cascade. Belongs to the receptors of complement activation (RCA) family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Cell surface; Membrane protein, GPI anchor

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 1 E4|1 56.89 cM

Cellular Component: apical plasma membrane; cell surface; external side of plasma membrane; lipid raft; plasma membrane

Molecular Function: enzyme inhibitor activity; lipid binding; viral receptor activity
