UniProt Comments for MED28

MED28: a component of the mediator complex that can either repress or activate transcription. Mediator complexes are essential for basal and regulated expression of nearly all RNA polymerase II-dependent genes. They may act as a bridge, conveying regulatory information from enhancers and other control elements to the promoter. May be part of a complex containing NF2/Merlin that participates in cellular signaling to the actin cytoskeleton downstream of tyrosine kinase signaling pathways. Up-regulated by endothelial cells when exposed to tumor conditioned media.

Protein type: Transcription factor

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 4p16

Cellular Component: cortical actin cytoskeleton; membrane; Srb-mediator complex

Molecular Function: actin binding; protein binding

Biological Process: negative regulation of smooth muscle cell differentiation; regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; stem cell maintenance; transcription, DNA-dependent
