NCBI Summary for CD43

major glycoprotein of thymocytes and T lymphocytes [RGD, Feb 2006]

UniProt Comments for CD43

sialophorin: One of the major glycoproteins of thymocytes and T lymphocytes. Plays a role in the physicochemical properties of the T-cell surface and in lectin binding. Presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins. Has an extended rodlike structure that could protrude above the glycocalyx of the cell and allow multiple glycan chains to be accessible for binding. Is a counter-receptor for SN/Siglec-1. During T-cell activation is actively removed from the T-cell-APC (antigen-presenting cell) contact site thus suggesting a negative regulatory role in adaptive immune response (By similarity)

Protein type: Cell surface; Membrane protein, integral

Cellular Component: extracellular space; microvillus; cell surface; membrane; integral to plasma membrane; integral to membrane; basement membrane; uropod; cleavage furrow; external side of plasma membrane

Molecular Function: protein domain specific binding

Biological Process: positive regulation of tumor necrosis factor biosynthetic process; chronic inflammatory response; regulation of immune response; regulation of defense response to virus; negative regulation of cell adhesion; negative thymic T cell selection; response to protozoan; cell surface receptor linked signal transduction; negative regulation of T cell proliferation; monocyte activation; defense response to bacterium; T cell costimulation; positive regulation of T cell proliferation; positive regulation of protein amino acid phosphorylation; negative regulation of type IV hypersensitivity; negative regulation of T cell activation
