NCBI Summary for TRXR2

Thioredoxin reductase (TR) is a dimeric NADPH-dependent FAD containing enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of the active site disulfide of thioredoxin and other substrates. TR is a member of a family of pyridine nucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductases and is a key enzyme in the regulation of the intracellular redox environment. Three thioredoxin reductase genes have been found that encode selenocysteine containing proteins. This gene partially overlaps the COMT gene on chromosome 22. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

UniProt Comments for TRXR2

TXNRD2: Maintains thioredoxin in a reduced state. Implicated in the defenses against oxidative stress. May play a role in redox- regulated cell signaling. Belongs to the class-I pyridine nucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductase family. 4 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Nucleotide Metabolism - pyrimidine; EC 1.8.1.9; Nuclear receptor co-regulator; Oxidoreductase

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 22q11.21

Cellular Component: mitochondrion; mitochondrial matrix

Molecular Function: protein binding; thioredoxin-disulfide reductase activity; mercury (II) reductase activity; FAD binding; mercury ion binding; NADP binding

Biological Process: response to reactive oxygen species; response to oxygen radical; cell redox homeostasis; detoxification of mercury ion
