NCBI Summary for CASPASE-6

This gene encodes a member of the cysteine proteases that plays important roles in regulating apoptosis and neurodegeneration. The encoded protein is involved in the transmission of pain and axonal degeneration. Genetic deletion of this gene in mice results in the delay of axon pruning and protects from axon degeneration. UniProt Comments for CASPASE-6

CASP6: Involved in the activation cascade of caspases responsible for apoptosis execution. Cleaves poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase in vitro, as well as lamins. Overexpression promotes programmed cell death. Heterotetramer that consists of two anti-parallel arranged heterodimers, each one formed by a 18 kDa (p18) and a 11 kDa (p11) subunit. Interacts with BIRC6/bruce. Activation is suppressed by phosphorylation at Ser-257. Belongs to the peptidase C14A family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: EC 3.4.22.59; Apoptosis; Protease

Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; cytoplasm; cytosol; nucleus

Molecular Function: peptidase activity; identical protein binding; protein binding; hydrolase activity; endopeptidase activity; cysteine-type peptidase activity

Biological Process: regulation of apoptosis; response to hydrogen peroxide; positive regulation of retinal cell programmed cell death; positive regulation of apoptosis; positive regulation of neuron apoptosis; response to cytokine stimulus; acute inflammatory response to non-antigenic stimulus; response to glucose stimulus; proteolysis; response to iron ion
