Tissue specificity: Expressed in the liver, kidney, gall bladder, testis, ovary and male and femae reproductive tracts. Expressed in the ovarian stroma and the theca and granulosa layers of the ovarian follicle. Ref.1 Ref.2 Ref.4

Developmental stage: Detected in the theca and granulosa layers of the ovarian follicle in the white follicle (WF), F1, F3, F5, and postovulatory follicle stages. Ref.4

Induction: Induced in the theca layer of the F3 stage ovarian follicle by intravenous injection of LPS. Expression in the granulosa layer of the ovarian follicle is not affected by intravenous injection of LPS. Ref.4

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the beta-defensin family.

1. The chicken genome encodes only beta-defensins. The 13 chicken beta-defensin genes are clustered densely within a 86-Kb distance on the chromosome 3q3.5-q3.7. The deduced peptides share the characteristic defensin motif.
