NCBI Summary for MIZF

This gene encodes a transcription factor that interacts with methyl-CpG-binding protein-2 (MBD2), a component of the MeCP1 histone deacetylase (HDAC) complex, and plays a role in DNA methylation and transcription repression. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Aug 2011]

UniProt Comments for MIZF

MIZF: a transcriptional regulator of cell cycle-controlled histone H4 genes at the onset of S phase. Also activates transcription of the ATM and PRKDC genes. A histone H4-specific transcriptional regulator that associates with the cell cycle control element in the conserved proximal promoter regions of H4 genes. Interacts with NPAT to coactivate H4 gene transcription at the G1/S phase transition in response to cyclin E/CDK2 signaling. HiNF-P/NPAT colocalize to Cajal bodies in a cell cycle-specific manner. Disruption of the HiNF-P/NPAT interaction inhibits histone H4 gene expression at G1/S. Binds methyl-CpG-binding protein (MeCP2) and a histone deacetylase complex.

Protein type: Cell cycle regulation; Histone-binding; C2H2-type zinc finger protein

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 11q23.3

Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; Cajal body; nucleolus; nucleus

Molecular Function: protein binding; enzyme binding; DNA binding; histone binding; metal ion binding; transcription coactivator activity; chromatin binding; transcription factor activity

Biological Process: G1/S-specific transcription in mitotic cell cycle; myoblast differentiation; establishment of protein localization; regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; transcription, DNA-dependent; regulation of gene expression; in utero embryonic development; positive regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; DNA damage checkpoint; negative regulation of transcription, DNA-dependent; DNA repair; G1/S transition of mitotic cell cycle
