UniProt Comments for PFKFB2

PFKFB2: a bifunctional heterodimeric enzyme involved in both the synthesis and degradation of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, a regulatory molecule that controls glycolysis in eukaryotes. Regulates fructose-2,6-bisphosphate levels in the heart, while a related enzyme encoded by a different gene regulates fructose-2,6-bisphosphate levels in the liver and muscle. Two splice-variant isoforms have been described.

Protein type: Carbohydrate Metabolism - fructose and mannose; EC 2.7.1.105; EC 3.1.3.46; Kinase, other; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Phosphatase (non-protein)

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 1|1 E4

Cellular Component: cytoplasm

Molecular Function: 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase activity; fructose-2,6-bisphosphate 2-phosphatase activity; kinase binding; protein kinase binding

Biological Process: glucose catabolic process; glycolysis; lactate metabolic process; positive regulation of glucokinase activity; positive regulation of insulin secretion; pyruvate metabolic process; response to glucose stimulus
