NCBI Summary for Dcdc2a

This gene encodes a member of the doublecortin family. The protein encoded by this gene contains two doublecortin domains. The doublecortin domain has been demonstrated to bind tubulin and enhance microtubule polymerization. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2010]

UniProt Comments for Dcdc2a

DCDC2: May be involved in neuronal migration during development of the cerebral neocortex. Defects in DCDC2 may be a cause of susceptibility to dyslexia type 2 (DYX2); also known as specific reading disability type 2. Dyslexia is a relatively common, complex cognitive disorder that affects 5% to 10% of school-aged children. The disorder is characterized by an impairment of reading performance despite adequate motivational, educational and intellectual opportunities and in the absence of sensory or neurological disability. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Motility/polarity/chemotaxis

Cellular Component: axoneme; cell projection; cytoplasm; cytoskeleton; nucleus

Biological Process: cell projection organization and biogenesis; dendrite morphogenesis; nervous system development; neuron migration; positive regulation of smoothened signaling pathway; regulation of Wnt receptor signaling pathway; sensory perception of sound; visual learning
