UniProt Comments for SPON2

SPON2: Cell adhesion protein that promotes adhesion and outgrowth of hippocampal embryonic neurons. Binds directly to bacteria and their components and functions as an opsonin for macrophage phagocytosis of bacteria. Essential in the initiation of the innate immune response and represents a unique pattern- recognition molecule in the ECM for microbial pathogens. Binds bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Protein type: Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 4p16.3

Cellular Component: extracellular space; proteinaceous extracellular matrix

Molecular Function: antigen binding; lipopolysaccharide binding; metal ion binding; protein binding

Biological Process: axon guidance; cell adhesion; defense response to fungus; defense response to virus; induction of bacterial agglutination; innate immune response; mast cell mediated immunity; opsonization; positive regulation of interleukin-6 production; positive regulation of tumor necrosis factor production
