NCBI Summary for CNN2

The protein encoded by this gene, which can bind actin, calmodulin, troponin C, and tropomyosin, may function in the structural organization of actin filaments. The encoded protein could play a role in smooth muscle contraction and cell adhesion. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

UniProt Comments for CNN2

calponin 2: Thin filament-associated protein that is implicated in the regulation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction. It is capable of binding to actin, calmodulin, troponin C and tropomyosin. The interaction of calponin with actin inhibits the actomyosin Mg-ATPase activity. Belongs to the calponin family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Actin-binding; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 19p13.3

Cellular Component: focal adhesion; cytoskeleton; membrane; stress fiber; intercellular junction

Molecular Function: calmodulin binding; actin binding

Biological Process: regulation of actin filament-based process; negative regulation of phagocytosis; wound healing; actomyosin structure organization and biogenesis; cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis; hemopoiesis; negative regulation of cell migration; regulation of cell proliferation
