NCBI Summary for MMP19

Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. Most MMP's are secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. This protein is expressed in human epidermis and it has a role in cellular proliferation as well as migration and adhesion to type I collagen. Multiple transcript variants encoding distict isoforms have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]

UniProt Comments for MMP19

MMP19: Endopeptidase that degrades various components of the extracellular matrix, such as aggrecan and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (comp), during development, haemostasis and pathological conditions (arthritic disease). May also play a role in neovascularization or angiogenesis. Hydrolyzes collagen type IV, laminin, nidogen, nascin-C isoform, fibronectin, and type I gelatin. May play a role in pathological processes participating in rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-associated joint tissue destruction. Autoantigen anti-MMP19 are frequent in RA patients. Belongs to the peptidase M10A family. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: EC 3.4.24.-; Secreted, signal peptide; Secreted; Protease
