May mediate K(+) uptake into Deiters' cells in the cochlea and contribute to K(+) recycling in the inner ear. Important for the survival of cochlear outer and inner hair cells and the maintenance of the organ of Corti. May be required for basolateral Cl(-) extrusion in the kidney and contribute to renal acidification. Belongs to the SLC12A transporter family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

1. The Wnk3 protein isoforms have a similar effect on SLC12 cotransporters. NKCC1/2 and NCC were inhibited, even in hypertonicity, while KCCs were activated, even in isotonic conditions.
