NCBI Summary for SSH2

This gene encodes a protein tyrosine phosphatase that plays a key role in the regulation of actin filaments. The encoded protein dephosphorylates and activates cofilin, which promotes actin filament depolymerization. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. UniProt Comments for SSH2

SSH2: Protein phosphatase which regulates actin filament dynamics. Dephosphorylates and activates the actin binding/depolymerizing factor cofilin, which subsequently binds to actin filaments and stimulates their disassembly. Inhibitory phosphorylation of cofilin is mediated by LIMK1, which may also be dephosphorylated and inactivated by this protein. Belongs to the protein-tyrosine phosphatase family. 4 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: EC 3.1.3.48; Actin-binding; Protein phosphatase, dual-specificity; EC 3.1.3.16

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q11.2

Cellular Component: extracellular space; cytoskeleton; cytoplasm

Molecular Function: DNA binding; protein tyrosine/serine/threonine phosphatase activity; protein tyrosine phosphatase activity; actin binding; phosphoprotein phosphatase activity

Biological Process: regulation of actin polymerization and/or depolymerization; protein amino acid dephosphorylation; regulation of axonogenesis; actin cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis
