FGF-5 Antibody – Mouse Monoclonal

For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Catalog #: MBS690847

The FGF family is comprised of at least seven polypeptides that are potent regulators of cell proliferation, differentiation and function. All FGFs have two conserved cysteine residues and share 30-50% sequence homology at the amino acid level. FGF5 was… More details

NCBI Summary for FGF-5

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. This gene was identified as an oncogene, which confers transforming potential when transfected into mammalian cells. Targeted disruption of the homolog of this gene in mouse resulted in the phenotype of abnormally long hair, which suggested a function as an inhibitor of hair elongation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

UniProt Comments for FGF-5

Function: Plays an important role in the regulation of cell proliferation and cell differentiation. Required for normal regulation of the hair growth cycle. Functions as an inhibitor of hair elongation by promoting progression from anagen, the growth phase of the hair follicle, into catagen the apoptosis-induced regression phase

By similarity. Ref.10

Subunit structure: Interacts with FGFR1 and FGFR2. Affinity between fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and their receptors is increased by heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans that function as coreceptors. Ref.10

Subcellular location: Secreted

Potential.

Tissue specificity: Expressed in neonatal brain.

Developmental stage: Can transform NIH 3T3 cells.

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the heparin-binding growth factors family.

Sequence caution: The sequence AAB60698.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Erroneous gene model prediction.
