NCBI Summary for PRP4K

Pre-mRNA splicing occurs in two sequential transesterification steps, and the protein encoded by this gene is thought to be involved in pre-mRNA splicing and in signal transduction. This protein belongs to a kinase family that includes serine/arginine-rich protein-specific kinases and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). This protein is regarded as a CDK-like kinase (Clk) with homology to mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

UniProt Comments for PRP4K

PRP4: a kinase of the DYRK family associated with the spliceosome and the kinetochore. It binds pre-mRNA splicing factors SFRS8, PRP6 and pinin. It is an essential kinase that associates with both the U5 snRNP and the N-CoR deacetylase complexes. It may help coordinate pre-mRNA splicing with chromatin remodeling and transcriptional regulation. PRP4 has recently been shown to be a kinetochore component that is necessary to establish a functional spindle assembly checkpoint, and is necessary for recruitment or maintenance of the checkpoint proteins RPS27, MAD1, and MAD2 at the kinetochores.

Protein type: Spliceosome; Kinase, protein; RNA splicing; EC 2.7.11.1; Protein kinase, Ser/Thr (non-receptor); Protein kinase, CMGC; CMGC group; DYRK family; PRP4 subfamily

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 6p25.2

Cellular Component: nucleoplasm; chromosome

Molecular Function: protein serine/threonine kinase activity; protein binding; ATP binding; protein kinase activity

Biological Process: nuclear mRNA splicing, via spliceosome; RNA splicing; protein amino acid phosphorylation
