Penicillin G sodium

Background: Penicillin G sodium is a member of the beta-lactam antibiotics. beta-Lactams interfere with PBP (penicillin binding protein) activity involved in the final phase of peptidoglycan synthesis. PBP's are enzymes which catalyze a pentaglycine crosslink between alanine and lysine residues providing additional strength to the cell wall. Without a pentaglycine crosslink, the integrity of the cell wall is severely compromised and ultimately leads to cell lysis and death. Resistance to beta-lactams is commonly due to cells containing plasmid encoded beta-lactamases. Penicillin can be used as a selective agent in several types of isolation media.

Small volumes of Penicillin G sodium biochemical vial(s) may occasionally become entrapped in the seal of the product vial during shipment and storage. If necessary, briefly centrifuge the vial on a tabletop centrifuge to dislodge any liquid in the container`s cap. Certain products may require to ship with dry ice and additional dry ice fee may apply.
